Hey guys,

I'm totally new to this laptop experience and not very good with computers - help please!

I just purchased an Acer Aspire 5252-V440 laptop computer running Windows 7 and, even under light usage (not using a lot of applications simultaneously)... even sometimes just when using internet explorer alone!!!), my computer keeps freezing time after time after time for around 20-30 seconds. When I try to play around with the computer by minimizing the frozen application, or to try to Alt-tab to another application, sometimes I'm able to, sometimes I'm not. When I look up at the frozen application's top bar where the program name is shown, it says: "[program name] - Not responding".

So far, every tiem this has happened, after that 10-15 or 30 second freeze, it just magically unfreezes and everything is back to normal. BUT this happens all the time! it's driving me crazy and I don't even know where to start!

I'm not very good with computers, however, I can follow instructions. I will post whatever system specifications I can find you just below:

The system combines 2.3 GHz AMD V Series processor V140 for enhanced graphics performance and excellent multitasking, ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics deliver crystal-clear images for best entertainment on a 15.6-inch HD CineCrystal LED-backlit display.
Running on Windows 7 Home Premium operating system, Acer Aspire AS5252-V440 is optimized with 3 GB DDR3 RAM along with 250 GB SATA hard drive (5400 RPM). Other specs include SuperMulti DVD±R/RW drive, 1.3-megapixel HD webcam, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, 2-in-1 Media Card Reader, 3 USB ports and HDMI.




Can someone please walk me thru a step by step process, or give me straight forward instructions as to how I can produce some reports for y'all to know exactly what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Event viewer (local) and look for errors listed in the last day, week, etc. Then go to the windows log>application tab. Finally the windows Logs>system tabs.

You want to look for all errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

*List all the Security software you have ever had installed & currently have now on your computer please.

* Browser addons can create problems.
Check how many you have on your various browsers. Is each & every one really needed?

* Go to search, type device manager and look for any yellow warning markers.

* Run a system file check to verify and repair your system files.
To do this type cmd in search, then right click to run as administrator, then
SFC /SCANNOW

Ok, so I ran the eventvwr under the search feature.

1) Upon running the initial analysis, under the Event Viewer (local), i see the "24 hrs", "7 days", "last hour" columns. I did not see any errors (indicated in red anywhere). However, on this Overview and summary page, under the "Summary of administrive events" , under the Event Type, it lists "error", "warning," "information' etc. under the "error" one, it says there were 4 in the last 24 hrs and 127 in the last 7 days.

2) Now, under the Windows Logs > application tab:

scrolling down the list:

that's all I'm aware of... unless you can list some other ones to watch out for (i'm aware of norton utilities, but I don't think it's installed on here... or has been before)

5) Browser add-ons... how do I check which ones are installed? All i have is internet explorer installed

6) Pulled up Device manager : no yellow markers

7) after doing the SFC /SCANNOW

: windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations

8) running chkdsk: 0 bad file records processed.
0 EA records processed
60 reparse records processed
windows has checked the file system and found no problems

seems good to go...

now what?

The thing I noticed immediately is the Norton and McAffee.

Either or both could be the cause of this problem.

Hey guys,

Thanks again, JMH: i have seen your CAPI2 instructions there.. but kinda confusing. To make sure, all I need to do is go into that:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\CryptNetUrlCache

directory in my computer.. and simply erase everything in taht folder?

How do I then go to disable CAPI2 logging? (is this important that I disable this?)

Anything else I should know about this specific CAPI2 issue?

Re Cap 12.

Do not erase anything from any folder.

Forget your idea about "disabling CAP12 logging."

The Cap 12 drama has been around for quite a few years. Many threads have been written about the issue.

Suffice to say I was first introduced to this nuisance on two brand new Laptops with Vista Ultimate 64-bit & prior to SP1. Tried all the fixes & nothing worked. The error still comes & goes with monotonous regularity.

Lo & behold on another new Laptop running Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit a Cap 12 Error presented for a time, disappeared.... & the same pattern repeats.

Curiousity seeks answers always but there comes a time when one notices the sky hasn't fallen in. Monitor what happens whilst moving on.

IMHO don't be alarmed at this stage.
There is nothing confusing about monitoring the error only.
It may come & go.

Another 'really good' (tells a bit more) event viewer application is VEW

Download VEW by Vino Rosso http://images.malwareremoval.com/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your desktop

Double click it to start it Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 you will need to right click the file and select Run as administrator and click Continue or Allow at the User Account Control Prompt.

Click the check boxes next to Application and System located under Select log to query on the upper left
Under Select type to list on the right click the boxes next to Error and Warning Note: If running Windows Vista or Windows 7 also click the box next to Critical (not XP).

Under Number or date of events select Number of events and type 20 in the box next to 1 to 20 and click Run
Once it finishes it will display a log file in notepad
