Not sure if Win7 sees SSD as SSD

Hi

I just built a new machine w/ an Intel X-25M SSD as the primary OS drive. I know that you should not defrag and SSD. In defrag it says only drives that can be defragmented will be listed. Well my X-25M SSD is listed. So I thought I should check the driver. My driver box is the same as above. If I click Driver Details, I see

C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys
C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\MDPMGRNT.SYS
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\patmgr.sys
C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\snapman.sys

In Properties/General the Device Type is "Disk drives" In Properties/Details/Display Name the Value is Disk Drives.

So I am wondering if Win7 is seeing the SSD as an SSD [since it shows up in defrag] and if the correct driver is loaded for the SSD.

Thanks

I think you are reading it wrong. As per the engineering blogs "The automatic scheduling of defragmentation will exclude partitions on devices that declare themselves as SSDs". Do the following:

1) Open Disk Defragmenter
2) Click on Configure schedule button
3) Click the Select disks button

If the ssd is missing from that list, then it has been detected as an SSD and will not be automatically defragged.

When you initially open up disk defrag, it'll list ALL the disks whether it's SSD or HDD. having said that make sure you uncheck the defrag check against your ssd.

Also, as per the same blogs, "If the system disk is an SSD, and the SSD performs adequately on random reads and doesn’t have glaring performance issues with random writes or flushes, then Superfetch, boot prefetching, application launch prefetching, ReadyBoost and ReadDrive will all be disabled". But not for all SSDs.

Thanks ! - You are absolutely right. I did misread it. The SSD is not listed in the defrag disk list and I am getting quite good read benchmarks, as compared to others who have posted their SSD performance here [about 207MB/Sec.
