Not Sure What I'm Doing Wrong...HELP:-))

First wanted to say hello, I'm new to the forum. I'm having a problem with Virtual PC 2007. I have created two Virtual PC's one for Windows Server 2008 64 Bit and Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit. When I go to load the operating system for each I get the following error

Status:0Xc000035A
Info: Attempting to load a 64-bit application, this CPU in not compatable with 64-bit mode.

My PC is a QX9650 Extreme
Maximus Extreme MB
4 Gig OCZ Ram
3870x2 Video
Windows 7 RC 64-bit
64bit Virtual PC 2007 SR1

I checked my Processor and it says it is compatable with Virtual PC. I do not see in the Bios any settings for Virtual?? I'm new to program so I'm just hoping I've just overlooked a setting somewhere?? Can anyone help??

With Asus, the BIOS setting is called Enable Vanderpool Technology.

Thanks for your help with this Antman. I am now able to load 32 bit but it still will not allow 64 bit to load? If I'm not mistaken Virtual PC 2007 does sopport 64 Bit operating systems does it not? I'm sure I'm missing something simple, just not sure what.

I can be an idiot and fail to read thoroughly. See Virtual PC 2007 Release Notes . It says no support for 64 bit guest. Your CPU is 64 bit. Your virtual CPU is not.

Get Sun VirtualBox version 3.xxxx. Free. Supports 64-bit guests - no matter what some might tell you.

I'll Tell you what, I feel stupid if I had just taken the time to read...now I need to find a 32 bit load of Vista as all I have is a 64 bit disk. My 64 bit license should be good for 32 bit should it not? As lond as it is loaded only as one machine?

So the sun software works pretty well, the only other Virtual software I have played with a little is in Windows 2008 server.

I do not believe that 64-bit Vista keys work with 32-bit Vista, unfortunately.

Is it necessary for you to run both Win 7 and Vista simultaneously, or do you only ever work in one at a time?

For the most part I have been trying to avoid Vista as much as possible, I need to take a test for Vista so I was trying to load it in VM for the test.

I purchased this computer with 64-bit Vista and hated it, so I went back to XP 64-bit within just a few days. I am now running Win 7 RC and really like it so far. I just hate to spend any more on Vista than I already have.

Yes, the Sun VirtualBox software works very well. The newest 3.0 builds have the added support of 3-D enabled graphics support...so you can how have fancier graphics in the virtual machine.

Of all of the free virtualization packages, for home use I tend to like VirtualBox the best. Second would be VMWare Server. I use VMWare pretty much exclusively at work..but that is to maintain the best compatibility between our VMWare Server, ESX and ESXi hosts. I feel that both VMWare Server and VirtualBox have FAR BETTER support for Linux guests...which I probably use more than anything else.

While I have had all 3 products (VMware Server, Virtual PC 2007 and Virtual Box) installed on the same host computer at one time....I've also experienced some strange and complicated network issues that only resolved themselves after uninstalling all 3 and settling on 1. This was on my work laptop...so the product I settled on there was VMWare Server 2.0.

VBox is a little quirky, but I like it. FREE. I really like the VMWare Workstation. I used it for 30 days, but VBox does what I need.

I have an XP HTPC in Vbox that plays on the second monitor. My beautiful wife watches streaming video from the Philippines on it. Using an ATI Remote Wonder Plus, she effectively has a free standing machine.

VirtualXP was a total wash for this. Only basic video capability - it was ugly to watch.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I ended up installing the sun VM. It seems to work pretty good so far though, I am having issues getting Server 2008 to load for some reason (still playing with it).

Another stupid question, do I still perform windows updates, service packs, Virus programs, etc. for each VM?

To answer your valid and completely appropriate question, Yes.

Both my Vista Ultimate boxes, complete and upgrade versions, include both 32- and 64-bit DVD´s and only one serial. So same serial for both versions.

Of course OEM-version can be different, needing separate serials.

Mine is OEM, so I guess that explains it. I stand corrected.
