the fx4100 is a middle of the road processor, the i5 has a little more oomph, and the fx8150 is closer to i7 2600....

The i5-3450 hands down is a much better processor than the FX-4100. In general, the Core series processors are better performers than the AMD equivalents.

Here's a comparison on your i5 and the 4100: AMD FX-4100 vs Intel Core i5-3450

The i5-3450 also has integrated graphics. If you have a compatible board, you don't have to buy a graphics card. It also uses less wattage than the FX-4100, while performing better.

The FX-8150 has 8 cores. For gamers and the average user, 8 cores on any chip is usually overkill. AMD has to be competitive with it's pricing. That kinda explains why their 8 cores chips are priced closer to Intel's lineup of Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge processors. Prices also vary based upon the region you're in.

Not necessarily. It all depends on how the processor handles instructions. Here's a comparison of the two processors.

AMD FX-8150 vs Intel Core i5-3450

The FX outperforms the Core in a few sections, but the Core generally outperforms the FX.

Don't get too wrapped up in cores/speed/etc of a processor.

OP doesn't say how he's doing the comparison . . . to see multi-core performance you need to be rendering fast action (maybe Game or Video-footage), try rendering a 10-min video - that will show off the better performer.
FWIW my 2-core takes 5x (ie 50 min), but I do get a nice cuppa tea whilst it's doing it. However, there is a difference between Programs, so you'd have to be running the same software, and the same video-footage to do a straight comparison.

Be happy it's working OK.
(- and plan for when it ain't. )

This prog has been OK for nearly 1yr . . . . DVD Architect Studio v5.0 will give very similar Fault-Code( See postings). nearly 1 month later, without any video-processing, if I fiddle with the "Playlist" - this is part of the User-design and not anything "rogue" - but it suggests (to me?) that it's not any video-content (IE screen play action, or audio files) that are to blame.
