Hello guys

Im having some problems with my notebook and im not sure whats going on. Over the past couple of months when playing games the graphics have begun to stutter and even stall. I know nothing about graphics cards and alike and have posted beford but we never got to the bottom of it. Im sure my drivers need updating but anthing i download from ati i get the message incompatible with your graphics contact your notebook manufacturer for an update but acer still have the 2009 driver im using on their site. Its got that bad i installed doom 3 from 10 years ago and even that was laggy. I know its not a brilliant spec machine but it should run that surely.

Any help much appreciated

Thankyou

If the graphic performance is deteriorating that is not a driver problem, it is a hardware problem. Could be a loose or dirty connection with the display panel or graphic card,or a chip that is failing. Impossible to say without testing.

Unless you want to attempt to repair it yourself, then the only advice I can offer in this case is to take it back to where you bought it and have it looked at by a technician.

The correct driver for your card is here;

http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/P...Windows+7+-+64-Bit+Edition&keywords=&items=20

It is possible that the manufacturer has modified these drivers, but not really likely, so it should install.

The reference driver from AMD won't install with good reason, the DevID for your GPU isn't in it anywhere. The only way is to add the DevID manually or use something like this,

Mobility Modder - ATI Version, Install the Latest Drivers on your ATI laptop

no idea how well it will work (or work at all) with the latest drivers as the tool hasn't been updated in over a year.

Another thing is that from looking your laptop up it looks like it uses switchable graphics, using the Intel graphics for low power and/or normal use and the AMD graphics for more demanding use (games, etc); and your Device Manager screen shot sort of confirms it as it lists both. If you do manage to get the reference AMD driver to install that is one thing you will lose, as the driver from Acer installs both as well as the bits necessary for the switching to occur.

Ok thanks Mike will give that one a go.Im interested in what you said about the manufacturer altering the drivers as a friend mentioned this to me before. If this is the case surely acer in this case should have updated them on their site.At present their latest driver for this notebook is oct 09.

Thankyou for your help will let you know how it goes.

Indeed, that is apparently correct. You do need the the manufacturer's drivers in this case, or you need to modify the ATI driver as indicated by stormy13 above.

Sorry about that. No idea how that will affect the switching. I also have no idea how you can update the original Intel drivers on that machine.

But as I wrote, I don't think you have a driver problem, I think it is a hardware fault.

Hi stormy13

Your right on the money. The laptop does have the switchable graphics on it not that i use it. So are you saying then that the drivers will have been modified by acer
to suit this and the only way to get updated is to wait for them to release an update.

Thankyou

No worries Mike wouldnt have got this far without you. As for your thinking along the lines of hardware is there anything i can try to test this or anything in ccc i can tone down that may help ive never even used it to be honest.
The laptop is only a year old so im still under warranty if there is a problem

Thanks danny

If it is still under warranty then I would return it immediately and ask for repair or replacement.

Trying anything yourself might not work and would doubtless void the warranty.

Have you checked that it isn't overheating? Cleaned out the air intakes in necessary?

As far as an updated driver Acer may not have one for your specific model but I had a quick look at the one available for this one,

Home

it has a new AMD card in it and the Intel graphics is integrated into the CPU instead of on the motherboard, but if you go here,

Service & Support

and use the above model to search, the driver is dated from July of last year. I had a quick look at it and it has both the AMD and Intel driver in it (back to the integration of them for the switchable graphics), and enough DevID's for both AMD and Intel that there is a very good possibility it will work on yours.

Hi Stormy
Ok this is where im at. Tried the modder you gave the link for and no joy with that either.Ive just been looking at drivers for other model too and there all 1 or 2 years out of date also so maybee its not that after all.
How can i tell if its an overheating issue.
I have already taken the vacuum and a tin of compressed air to the intake and exhaust oulets and cleaned as much as possible.I did install GPU Z to check on the temps but to be honest was unsure about what it all meant.Have added a couple of screen shots if you could take a look for me please the first is idle the second is whilst playing and when the stuttering starts

Thanks Stormy

It is overheating, that is why your graphics are "stuttering".

Get it replaced under warranty.

the mobile hd 4500 isnt suited for gaming and like the guy above mike conner says it is probably over heating and starting to fail. you are putting too much stress on the gpu which isnt very high performance to begin with
