I have been having problems installing Visual Studio 2012, and was told that I should make sure the OS is up to date, so I went ahead and tried to install the updates; however, after a number of cycles of doing updates, then rebooting, then doing more updates, etc., I have 12 updates that persist, with these errors.

What shall I do?

This is what I did:

- downloaded and ran "Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x64"

-- it seemed to do one installation, and set up 2 directories named with hexadecimal characters, and then hung (I stopped it)

- directory: 98f52ce584d0984bf8

-- a bunch of applications that when I ran them, just responded with "Extraction Complete", but I could not detect just where the extraction result went

- directory: d4138a43bda246961104f33616

-- executed "netfx_extended_64" - got code 2203

-- executed "Setup" - got the messages "Setup has detected that this computer does not meet the requirements to complete this operation. The following blocking issues must ve resolved before you can
proceed." and "Blocking Issues: You cannot use this setup program to install the .NET Framework."

- directory: f289b98240fcabb69452a1

-- was empty

I then reran "Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x64" and let it continue until it finished.

I did let it go until it finished (which seemed to be without an error), and then tried to do Windows update, in which failed for the same 12 installs - code 643.

Code 643 means you're having a problem with either the MSI, one of your .NET Framework packages or both.

But I need to see your logs:
4. Log Collection

The steps that we have done have limited automated fixing capabilities, however they are excellent diagnostic tools and generate very informative logs.

  1. Navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Windows\Logs
  2. Right-click and on the CBS folder and select Copy.
  3. Minimise all open windows and right-click on your Desktop, then select Paste.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder on your Desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  5. A file, CBS.zip should appear on your Desktop.

We are going to try and repair your .NET Framework installations.

Go to this site read the instructions, download and run the repair tool: Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool

If you want to run the tool right after it is downloaded click on run, but, make sure you have any other programs and files closed before you do that.

When done, restart your machine and run the updates sequence again. Post back on success or failure.

Would you please fill in your system specs: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

I did as you had instructed, and still the 12 installs failed, again, all with code 643.

When I tried the "SystemInfo" app, I got this message:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\clr.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

There is no CheckSUR log I can see - and no SFC results.

There are however a number of errors in the CBS logs - one of which is

OK, I did everything again, and when I got to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 update, the Visual Studio app (it somehow got opened and appear as its infinity symbol on an icon) showed a message box something like

the operation could not be completed

Then I continued with the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool (it said that if there were any errors to continue) and got a dialog box that said:

Submit additional information

The tool is unable to resolve the installation issue on your computer. The following logs will be sent to Microsoft for further analysis.

Then when I clicked on the logs link, it downloaded a cab file FixDotNet20130731222639656, which is about 50 MB and too large for me to attach in this message. I have attached the latest from the Logs directory as had been instructed earlier. (The large cab files there have not been updated since I last sent them.)

I could only find two errors in the CBS log:
Code:
2013-07-31 15:03:45, Error CBS Failed to check whether package is partially installed, package: Windows7SP1-KB976933~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514 [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]
2013-07-31 15:03:45, Error CBS Failed to call external evaluate applicability on package: Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514, Update: 976933-0_neutral_PACKAGE [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]
And both your CheckSUR logs look incomplete as if there were problems in running SURT, all of the individual results in each log should have a summary. I'm not blaming you it just looks like there were problems in running SURT

The CheckSUR log looks incomplete, no summary.
The CheckSURpersist log has five instances of running the SURT the beginning and ending reports have no summary, the three in the middle do.

Are you absolutely sure you have Windows 7 64bit? How to check: System Information Look to #8 on list "System Type" x64 or x32 based PC?

Before you run the SURT again I would like you to do a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html Option Two Step #2 If it found no problems go on to running the SURT, If you do have violations with the SFC scan that it couldn't fix,see blue note box below step #4.

When all good use the appropriate link to run the SURT.
If you have the x32 run this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3132

If you have the x64 run this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20858
Post results in next reply.

You still need to fill in your system specs: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html See step 5 you can fill them in automatically using the tool provided.

Meanwhile I'm going to go over your most recent CBS log more thoroughly.

I most definitely have x64, and the Windows Resource Protection Scan had no errors. The SystemInfo app showed an error dialog, but I went ahead and got that info from the Control Panel System Information. I will go and run the Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x64 app again.

I found this was interesting....

That leads back to Information about Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2

0x80070490: Windows Update error 80070490 That suggests a corrupt CBS file and a repair install is indicated. Couldn't we just rename the current CBS to CBS.OLD then rerun the SURT?

I would like to see the OP's results after his next SURT run before I go any further.

I *think* it implies that one of the cat files is corrupted - CheckSUR doesn't check them all

OK, the run of Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x64 is complete (it did not mention any error.)

What to do now?

Where is the CBS log, including both CheckSUR logs??

What is it that you do not understand procedure?
I would like to see the OP's results after his next SURT run before I go any further. 4 Hours Ago 11:04 AM
Logs, Logs, Logs.....We need to see the Logs!!!
