Well last night I had my wife pick me up starcraft 2. Installed it was exicted launched the launcher screen goes black to load a cgi or opening splash screen and my screen just stays black....
So I did reasearch and blizzard said you need the most updated drivers for the game to work. I said ok went to nvida site download latest drivers 258.?? dont remember since im at work. go to install it and gets to the nvida control panel and it fails to install each time and makes my video card uninstall its self and reverts to default generic drivers. So I uninstalled all nvida drivers and programs restart the computer to install the new drivers and my pc detects the card and installs old drivers from 2009 dec.
This has just been a loop of an issue and i really want to play sc2. Any ideas?

Rollback the driver by going to Control Panel > Device Manager > Display Adapter > Rollback Driver. If this does not do the trick you might have to go back through what I typed and Uninstall the gtx 260 then shut down and cold boot. Download CCleaner and DriverSweeper to clean out any nVidia stuff left over, nVidia drivers don't always like to be updated without being clean on some PC's.

do ccleaner and driver sweeper clean out reg entrys as well? Since even when I uninstall the video card and delete all nvida stuff it auto finds a driver on the pc, prob in win sys32 folder or some where.

Yes, both clear driver components but to clean the Registry you have to run the Registry portion, best to do this in Safe Mode then reboot, it works very well and you can then choose a new driver to use. I have found the nVidia drivers vary a great deal and I swapped out my gtx 280m's in SLi for 2 ATi 4870's in CrossFireX and things are much better although when the nVidia 280's were right they were excellent, do a quick check on the Aurora Forum to see if there is a recommended version which would be a great help as a starting point.

After a few tries of uninstall/install I got my old drivers working.. so I now have drivers that date back to april 2010, so now this still remains. A) cant install new drivers B) when launching sc2 black screen then computer freeze

Don't be concerned that your drivers date back to a given date, the key to a good driver vs a great driver is a good driver works with most applications and a great driver works well with nearly all applications, there is no perfect driver that would meet all the possible combination's we have available, if there were there'd be no updates.

I am using ATi Catalyst 10.3 on my Alienware M17x, Catalyst 10.2 on my XPS Gen 1 and Catalyst 10.6 on my Studio XPS 435T/9000 reason being they are great drivers for the different PC's I own.

Did you use driver sweeper properly? As in uninstall current driver, boot in to safe mode, use driver sweeper and clean Nvidia driver, boot back in to normal mode and Windows shouldn't install anything for your graphic card then install driver.

The latest drivers are an all-in-one driver set, so they're for all Nvidia graphic cards. Have you tried some other things with the drivers you do have installed such as just disabling SLI?

it auto installed a driver first time because the pc was set to search ms driver database at boot up if it found a device that the pc did not have a driver loaded for. I disabled that feature and re did the ccleaner and driversweeper

well i was finaly able to install the new drivers yay! I feel like a "jack wagon" though since what was stopping me was my reg protection programs. They werent prompting me to make changes when they control center was installing and making reg edits. But alas I cannot still launch sc2 without a blksod

Well good to hear you got the driver's installed. We've all missed a trivial solution like that before ;)

I've not got SC2 myself, so I've not really any idea on the problems. You could try something like setting your audio playback device to 24bit, 48000 Hz (Studio Quality) (Right click on speaker icon in taskbar>playback devices>properties for your speakers>advanced) as I know this fixes a lot of startup crashes for other games.

Have you done any research ib the sc2 forum? I don't know the game but their is a thread on blksod, unfortunately no fixes but like most bsods it's usualy driver related or in your case have you tried it with your reg protection programs disabled?Forum StarCraft II Hopefully I'm not making a fool out of myself but then it wouldn't be the first time I was way off mark. Fabe

yes I tried that, next thing im going to try is uninstall my firewall and all my proc programs and see if that works, but reading the sc2 forum apparently it is a big issue for alot of users, some people with ati cards went into ccc and disabled a setting edpd or somthing and it worked. Looked for somthing like that in nvida cp but saw nothing.
