Nvidia driver problem with win 7 x64?

Hi,

I did quite a bit of looking around and there seem to be lots of people with Nvidia problems in Win 7, however not exactly what I'm seeing.

Here's my setup:
Core 2 Duo E6400
Abit AB9Pro Mobo
Leadtek Nvidia 8800 GTS
3GB RAM
2x150GB WD HDD -> RAID0
Win 7 Ultimate x64 RTM

First off when I ran the "Windows Experience Index" I get a 5.7 rating for "gaming graphics" but only a 1.0 for graphics (Areo performance)

Along with that I am noticing "slowness" with desktop and IE rendering performance. For example it takes a long time to browse to a new page (much longer than it did under vista) or to even open a new blank tab. I have also noticed slow performance with the built in games. When dealing cards for solitare, the dealing animation "stutters" and when starting mine sweeper, the animation of the board being drawn "stutters" too.

I had this behavior with the Nvidia 191.07 drivers so I decided to give the Nvidia beta 195.39 drivers a try. They too show the same problem.

Anyone have any suggestions what I can do to get things working better? Is anyone else seeing this with a similar (or different) configuration?

Oh, I should also mention that I upgraded to the latest BIOS for my mobo as suggested elsewhere and that did not help either.

TIA for any and all help!

Uninstall the nvidia display drivers in add/remove programs, followed by any other nvidia drivers. Reboot into safe mode and run driver sweeper, reboot again into safe mode and install the newest drivers - run as adminstartor and choose the right x32 or x64 drivers. Update your chipset drivers too.

WEI for me is also different - 5.5 for gaming and 4.4 for aero???

THanks for the suggestion! I'll get on that!

One quick question on recommended procedure. After uninstalling the Nvidia driver it's going to ask me to reboot to complete the removal. Should I let the machine come back up into "regular" mode or reboot directly into safe mode?

Thanks!

Don't reboot, ignore it. Uninstall from the control panel, then uninstall other drivers. Only then reboot into safe mode.

Wanted to report the results of my "work."

Unfortunately I am still seeing the exact same problem after completing all of the steps (uninstall, boot safe mode, driver sweeper, reboot safe mode, install drivers, reboot normal mode)

Any other suggestions as to what to try or what I can check on to see what's going wrong?

Still not sure if this is a display driver issue or something else.

lots of, may OC soon, liking Win7 more and more....I plugged it into my 46XBR3, worked right away, on HDMI, a slider for resolution was easy to tweak, plugged it back to my NEC 22, it is like it saved the ini file somewhere, I did nothing to change the resolution on the different TV/Monitors...this is major cool, truly plug and play (well, maybe)...lol

Thanks for tue suggestion but........

Unfortunately, the problem still exists with Aero disabled.

This was just moved to the drivers section. (My bad on improper placement! :o)

Has anyone else seen similar problems with Nvidia (or any other) drivers?

I'm not 100% certain what the problem is right now. I'm just guessing it's the video drivers.

Hi. It is working fine for me. See My System Specs for my entire setup, but I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with a EVGA GTX 260 Core 216 (overclocked to 680 MHz) and it has a Windows Experience rating of 7.3 for gaming and a 7.3 for graphics. I just installed the video drivers that came with the installation disk of the video card and it works fine. This is a brand new card though.

I tried updating my chipset drivers as well and that did not solve the problem. :(

I have also tried the latest released driver (191.07) and the latest beta driver (195.39) both with the same results

Can you show us a screenshot of when you right click the card in device manager and choose properties, then driver tab?

You're welcome. That seems cool so really only other thing that would affect performance is chipset drivers. If that's all up to date as well, graphics should run well.

In this case, don't pay any attention to the WEI rating and enjoy.

Are there any exclamation points showing in the device manager?

No exclamation points in device manager.

I'm not really concerned about the WEI number, but I'm taking that as another symptom of whatever the problem is. The biggest problem is that I see things responding slowly on screen. (i.e. Starting a new minesweeper game, the tile animation "stutters" also when starting a new solitaire game the card dealing animation is not smooth and skips) Also, I'm seeing extremely slow performance when navigating to a new web page and even when opening a new blank tab.

So, I'm digging (clutching at straws) to find the cause of the problem and get it remedied

I hear ya. What you could do is go to start menu search box. Type system information then hit enter. On the sceen that pops up, hit ctrl+s.

Use Winrar or zip the saved file and attach to a post with the paperclip. I can have a look and see if there's anything I can say about it.

Have you tried uninstalling any nVidia drivers (making sure to delete the files, if that option is presented), rebooting, then going to Windows Update to see what drivers are found for your video card?
