Nvidia geforce 240 gts graphics card issue

I have recently been having a few problems with my graphics card running at a high temperature so i read a few things online on how to clean it and then i did so. Now when i start up my computer normally "start windows normally" i get blue screen and the computer re-starts. When i run dxdiag it says i have no graphics card so im not really sure if its broken or if i have re installed it incorrectly.

Any help with what the most likely cause of this would be is greatly appreciated.

Power down and re-seat the graphics card again. If it requires an extra power cord make sure that is connected. If it has a cooling fan attached I'd watch to make sure it spins up.

EDIT: what exactly did you do to clean it?

Hi thank you for your reply, I think that re-seating would definitely be a great idea and I will try that in a little while.


to clean it I followed this guide (not sure if anything is wrong with that).

*After re-seating the computer no longer blue screens but the screen goes into energy saving mode* (presuming it doesn't blue screen as the computer does not restart)

So did you actually remove the heat sink from the card or just clean the dust out? If you did remove the heat sink I hope you used the correct type and correct amount of NEW thermal past?

Nah I didn't remove the heat seat I just cleaned the dust out

OK, unless it got damaged from electro static shock, it should be fine. Is it working OK now or are there still issues?

hmm there are still issues, I started my computer again and it got to the login screen but had patches of black and white everywhere any ideas what that could mean?

Thats usually referred to as "artifacts" and can be an indication of a damaged or failing Video card. Does that video card have a cooling fan attached to its heat sink? If yes is it spinning at normal speed?

yes the fan is attached and spinning, still says I have no graphics card (N/A) when I run dxdiag so i have no idea

It sounds like it may have been damaged while you were cleaning it. Electrostatic discharge maybe? Re-seat it one more time maybe then un-install and re-install the video drivers. maybe even re-install your chip-set drivers.
