It means there is a problem connecting. You should run the troubleshooting wizard by right clicking the icon

See, I don't think that's the problem. I have the same problem, but with the wired ethernet icon. It seems that VPN clients mess with Windows 7 in such a way that it shows the disconnected icon even if all networks are connected, including the VPN. I've experienced this behavior on two separate computers, both after enabling an incoming VPN connection. Deleting the connection and reconnecting sometimes works.

Looks like it could be internet access issue.

Can you go to Network Sharing and where the Red cross is?

See, that's the whole thing. It LOOKS like an internet connection issue, but it isn't a connection issue at all. The network is fully connected without at problems at all. It's just that Windows sees that one possible connection (the VPN) isn't connected, so displays the disconnected icon. Notably, even when the VPN connection is connected along with the Internet connection, the icon does not change. It seems to me that this is just a bug in Windows 7, as this didn't happen with older versions of Windows, and I've seen multiple posts on the subject.

I have had same problem. And I've solved it.
It happened when I installed BlueSoil which added VPN connection, but the whole problem is, I had Hamachi adapter, which was disabled and after BlueSoil was installed Hamachi connection disappear. So I had to remove Hamachi in device manager and reinstall'em and icon is back in normal state.

All that little orange sun means is there is a wireless network available. You should be able to disable your wireless adapter and it will go away.....or have you tried this and I'm way off?

Just go to "change adapter settings" and disable if you're not using it.

EDIT: I didn't realize how old this post was, but it might come up again. haha

But in my case, I was connected to AP, but there was no signal meter as usually, but just a yellow star which shouldnt be.

I can confirm that the Network Icon stops working when a VPN server is setup!

Prior to creating a VPN, all worked fine.

Please Microsoft rectify this bug:cry:.

Yes, as Ency have said, reinstalling Hamachi made the icon ok again. And the problem began after changing bluetooth driver, too. Thanks! VJ
