A refurbished laptop with a valid copy of Win 7 Pro randomly locked up. I installed Win 7, from disk, but did not copy the activation code. Now I cannot reactivate it.

It has a COA on back, but this includes a number that is will not activate the laptop.
I can't even enter it in, since it starts with "00212"

Originally, it was sold with Vista, and has a Vista activation key in the battery compartment. This does not work.

thanks in advance for any assistance.

Where did you get your copy of Windows 7 Pro and it's COA key?

You have this and as far as I can find it is a Default key and will never activate.

Windows Product Key: *****-*****-CM74G-RPHKF-PW487

A Vista key will not activate Windows 7

I bought it from a "reputable" Ebay seller... When the issue arose, I requested a copy of the activation key and they said they were unable to provide it. Since then, I've only bought refurbs from Dell.

But the useless laptop is cluttering up my office and I'm reluctant to toss it since we have a use for it & it's good enough. It does have what looks to be an authentic windows COA MS part QLF-00311 with a security ribbon.

When the Dell computer was delivered to you, what operating system was pre-installed?

I will request our expert on such matter to take a look at your problem to make sure I haven't misguided you.
He also may have some advice to solve your problem.
Just hang in there, he is always busy to very busy.

His name is Noel.

The COA has an official looking serial number, but it is not the key and cannot be entered to activate Win 7. I tried using the above displayed "default" key to restore / find the original key (which was present when I bought it), but it did not work. I understand that the Vista key will not work, but that's what's present in the battery area.

There is no valid Product Key that includes a '0' -

Note that the following characters cannot be used - A E I L N O S U Z 1 0 - so don't bother trying unless you like the noise it makes :)

most of the time, what looks like a '0' is actually a 'Q'

Having said that, it looks to me as if this machine originally shipped with Windows 8 installed, although there appears to be a valid Win7 SLIC table, which would mean that a Dell Recovery disk may work. Do you have any Dell Windows 7 Recovery disks to hand?

re: Dell Recovery disk, I do not have one.
I used a purchased recovery disk, but it was not specific to Dell.

I did find this 682,377 kb cabinet file which may be the original from Dell (from Dell help forum). I downloaded but couldn't figure out what to do with it, and didn't know that it would help with the unlock key issue.

That appears to be merely a driver disk, and won't do anything for you in terms of activation.

Is there a COA sticker on the machine's case, or a Windows 8/Win8Pro sticker?

I hate these new Refurb program rules!
If you're lucky you may be able to get a set of recovery disks from Dell for a reasonable sum - but this is one case where eBay is probably as good as anything. YOu should be able to get the disks from there for a lot less ;)
