I am running Windows 7. For some reason the list of updates includes an update for Office XP Service Pack 3. However, this update always fails. Why does Windows 7 include an update for Office XP. All the other updates install fine.

Thats because your computer is likely set up for Microsoft update rather than plain windows updates.

While Windows Update provides you with updates specifically for Windows, Microsoft Update expands the service to download and install updates for other Microsoft software, such as Microsoft Office and Windows Live. Automatic updating is a feature that allows you to set your PC to automatically download and install updates using either service, making it easy and convenient for you to keep your Windows PC current.

You can turn off office update listings by clicking on "Change settings" in the left panel on the Windows update page, then unchecking the box under the heading "Microsoft updates". Alternatively, you can just right click on the offered office update and hide it so it wont show up in the future.

You can try install this update from Microsoft Download Center (not from Windows Update)

Below you have description SP3 for Office XP and possible issues with instalation process Description of Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3

If really nothing help the only solution is completely reinstall Office.I recommend also to buy the newest version of Office.

I have a similar problem. I have an old, but good, copy of Windows XP Pro and whenever I am prompted to install an update for Office XP Service Pack 3 I receive the message that installation has failed because I need to use the CD-Rom. Problem is that I've lost the CD in my last move. Do I really need this update? I'm happy with the old copy and don't want to spend a hundred or so to buy a new one. If I uncheck the "Microsoft Updates" I'm afraid I'll miss out on crucial updates. Any suggestions?
