Doug, did you reset your motherboard to factory defaults at any time? I'd try that, put a fresh bit of thermal paste on and try your aftermarket cooler again. Unless something in the mounting hardware is broke, I doubt the factory Intel cooler does better than ANY aftermarket cooler.

So went back and did this again, same thing temp spikes.

Odd Doug, a stock Intel cooler has a hard time cooling an ice cube.

Guess I got lucky with this one, ran ibt another round (10 passes) while @4.5 and max temp was 84C.

I really don't understand this but after hours of trying over and over it is what it is.

Heck I get over 90C within 3 seconds at 4500 with a hyper 212 EVO running IBT. Doug there has to be something wrong in your mounting hardware or the cooler interferes with something that's not real obvious.

Yeah something isn't right with it. I gave it several tries, spent a few hours even changing my paste method to no avail. I am impressed I can run the stock cooler@ 4.5 with decent temps. When I game it does not go higher than 67C. I'm going to get a water cooler soon. I hope I have better luck with it

With the temps you are getting I think going liquid will be a waste maybe and not get lower. But I have been wrong and often so.

There's no such thing as waste if it's reducing temps

If you're getting temps like that with a stock cooler then water is likely bring it down a good amount.
As an example my 8350 has never been over 54c with voltages upto 1.51v with a H100i and the other closed loop coolers are not much different. Some are slightly better and some slightly worse depending on luck of the draw i think.

I was thinking Doug's readings were all wrong, and now I'm thinking maybe he just has a good CPU that requires very little voltage.

But if a stock, crappy Intel cooler keeps a i7 at 82C running IBT, I really doubt liquid would be any better. If Doug was building a custom WC system, that would be a horse of a different color. Intels may use lower volts than AMD, but they pour on the hear faster in my experience.

It would be better though, As you have said the "crappy Intel cooler" has his temps at a good level. So a better cooler will cool it more. A better cooler can't cool it the same or worse otherwise it wouldn't be better Would it be worth it though is a different matter.
There isn't much i know when it comes to Intel though.

I don't believe the readings. I considered doing a rma but I only paid pretty much what it cost to ship it. I think Gary is right the mounting harrdware is off. I will see if I can bend them to get better contact.

Tommy, I seriously doubt anyone learned anything from me about overclocking. Besides, I don't know who Redmoonbeam is. But I do know, your CPU is not running 4200MHz at 0.896V. You need to see the real voltage. Try setting power options to Balanced. If that does not work, set your C6 in bios from auto to enabled. But, your 3770K should be able to run 4.2 at stock voltage. Dude, I really have no idea what, but I think something is really wrong with your cooler situation. I'm benchtesting a Z77 Maximus V gene with a 2600K right now with the Intel cooler. I'm idling at 41. I wouldn't even consider running Prime. When it goes into the rig, it will have an Antec 920 on it. But I just wanted to make sure it ran good before putting it in the case.

I ran 10 passes of IBT at 4.5, which is more intense than prime and only hit 84.

You are right, the only reason I did was my complete disappointment in the aftermarket cooler I got. I stick the stock cooler in and it runs cooler, WT#. I'm happy with the cpu, will get a water cooler before I try for more. I think Gary was right, the mounting hardware must be off on the N520 it just isn't getting good contact.

Steve this is what i got reading your tut do these voltages look correct or am i blowing it ?

Also i am about to run a stability test but i want to know what you think about the voltage first think i need more or less ???
