Been having hard freezes, sometimes reboots, sometimes have to hard reset. Ran Memtest+ for 8 hours, 17 passes with no errors after 1st time. Swapped video card, no change. have swept nvidia driver and installed an older version. Some BSOD, but mostly kernel power error with 0 bug check. It ran 4 hours in safe mode with networking last night with no issue. booted a clean start and it froze while scanning with Malwarebytes while I slept. Not sure if I have a hardware issue or not. The 1st freeze cleared my BIOS settings, the cpu and ram settings. most others just had to reboot. One freeze changed my clock to 2000. Is it possible for a windows/driver fault to cause BIOS reset? A Guy

I have had the Bios go nuts after some overclocking. You do not do a serious OC from what I remember. Not sure how long you have been getting this, but a restore, or recent image if you have one might get rid of it. It could be hardware but hard to tell so far. Post in the BSOD section with the bsods and hopefully you can get the answer. How old is your psu? it might be acting up

Well, after I posted that, it froze and shut straight off, and reset BIOS again. I've tried older images. I am thinking Power or MB as it resets the BIOS. Not every time, but this time it didn't just freeze and stay frozen, nor freeze and reboot. It froze and immediately shut right off and reset the BIOS. Grrr. this rig is 3 1/2 years old. I may have a PSU I can sub in to test. But my experiment in safe mode last night gave me hope it may be windows. I'm back in safe mode now, going to remain there the rest of the night, or until I have an issue. Haven't posted in BSOD as it mostly doesn't BSOD, so only have 1 dump, and it was while using the sub GPU and the driver windows found for it. I may have to start a thread in hardware, and point everyone here to it as I don't want to take this thread too off topic. A Guy

Okay, good luck Bill. And remember when at the point go to stock settings, re seat every component and cable, and then see if the fault starts to show itself

Thanks Doug, done all that. The same OC from day one, and it doesn't ramp up at idle, such as when my crashes have occurred. A Guy

Bill, I have had bios change a setting on a BSOD, but only once did it completely change everything. I later found out that I had a dead short in the motherboard. I don't think a driver can change a bios setting, but a BSOD could. But, you being able to run in safe mode indicates a driver, to me. Have you changed any hardware or installed new software recently? If so, I would look at that. I know I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. You know as much about this stuff as we do, even though you do like to play like you don't. But, my suggestion, if you haven't already is to remove the CMOS battery for about 30 minutes, then boot into bios and set optimized defaults, set the ram, sata controller and boot order. That should rule out a bios setting being changed that you are not aware of. If you think it possible you have a corrupted bios I would consider re flashing it, but only after it gets stable enough to where you won't have a BSOD during the flash. Also, is your SSD firmware up to date?

Have you considered doing a clean install on a spare hard drive? If you have one that would be a good option. Only install the absolute essential programs to function and the motherboard drivers. See if the BSOds stop. That could answer a lot of questions.

I'm sure you did it, but also clear the cmos to get a fresh start...Just saw after posting Steve added input. I had a recent problem like that and clearing cmos/ re-imaging brought it all back

Bill, you posted at the same time I did. But what you just described sounds more like a PSU or a dead short to me. Also, Greg would be mad at me, but I never use the GPU drivers Windows provides. They are always quite old ones. I always download from AMD or Nvidia, whichever I have.

Thanks guys, posted in BSOD to see what they come up with 1st. I only used the driver windows found as it wouldn't require me wiping drivers, etc. just to use the 2nd GPU to test. That way it would be easier to go back to my original GPU, which I have now done. My SSD firmware is up to date.

I did restore to an image from the week before. I have a 550W BFG PSU I could use to test if necesary. I'd hate to undo my wiring management, I don't constantly play like you lot But if it's MB, it will mean a different new MB so a new CPU as well. I think I could use everything else, but would likely do some ram and maybe GPU if I'm going there. I'd really like to keep this PC as is. Ram or GPU would have been easiest, but also were easiest to test, and apparently not the issue.

I'm back in Safe mode, and so far so good. I was really interested if a windows fault, even if it wasn't a BSOD, could cause the BIOS reset. Was assuming it wouldn't , so must be hardware. I'll edit this post and link the BSOD thread. Safe mode is like a child's toy, and I'm off my game. A Guy

Would the CMOS battery cause a hard freeze, followed sometimes by a restart? I thought it was just to hold the settings when the PC is powered off. A Guy

The bios resetting would result from a bad battery, but I don`t think it would cause a freeze or a restart or a shutdown.

True, I don't think it will cause the freezes either. Another thought, is your displayed date correct?/

Date corrected after the 2 BIOS resets, yes. cMOS battery was at 3.24v. Reimaging with last Acronis backup and will do some surfing after I get back. Posting from my work *cough* iPad :shock:
