I have an old laptop hard drive I want to recover pictures from onto my desktop pc which is running windows 8.1. I bought an ez-connect for 2.5" IDE this one here Amazon.com: Kingwin USB 2.0 to SATA and IDE Adapter for 2.5 Inches and 3.5 Inches Hard Drive with One Touch Back-Up: Computers & Accessories
But when I connect it to my hard drive and then the usb to my computer. I go into disk management and can see the device connected as Disk 1. But it shows as unknown and not initialized. Also when I go into device and printers it shows up as USB storage device. It doesnt show up under devices and drives like my normal Hard drive which is Local C; drive . But my question is how do I view the files on there and how do I access them?

The Hard drive is is a Hitachi Model: HTS548080M9AT00

I've got the jumpers attached so that it is a slave following these setups

Hook it up to a Windows 7 machine.

Or make a Linux Live boot cd, boot up with that on your Windows 8 PC with the old drive hooked up, mount the old drive, explore it and you should be able to copy and paste your data to the Windows 8 drive, which may also have to be mounted.

You may or may not have to disable secure boot in the bios of the Windows 8 PC before you can boot the Linux disc.
