Hi all. Got same older PCs at home. Up-graded the broadband speed on our plan. Haven't seen any difference. In fact I think the opera browser is responding slower now. Download speed right now is 19Mbps was about 10Mbps. According to the online test.

Why does it feel just like its always been, nothing seems to have quickened. Could it be the age of the PCs?

We were all forced out of ADSL2 into broadband. However it's not fiber all the way to the front door. Only to the 'node'. The plan says Between 12Mbps and 100Mbps. But it never breaks 20Mbps. Which is up from 10-11Mbps. I assume you need fiber to the wifi to get real speed. But it feels worse. The browser seems slower from click to page open.

There could be a range of factors. Router, modem or junk on your computer. If it's broadband it should have better speed. I don't understand a range of 12Mbps and 100Mbps. You should have a set speed.

Is this cable to the node its self? How old is the cable line if so?

Try Firefox portable and go to speedtest.net and/or speedof.me.

Just to let you know, Opera is a Chinese run browser. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Though, Firefox and Chrome are less than stellar as well. Mozilla Firefox, Portable (browser) | PortableApps.com

the speeds are about right for adsl2 you may increase the speed by getting a better cable from the socket to the router as most are very thin getting a shielded cable that look like a usb type can make a difference as it reduces noise and cheap on ebay

AaLF,

You don't say just how OLD that PC is, but,,,, remember, everything your PC does, has to be stepped through thousands of logic gates by your CPU. If you're running several programs at once, your CPU could be overworked and what you see as internet speed could suffer.

Given a few minutes at your keyboard, to optimize your system, could make a lot of difference in your speed. But it seems like you're too far away for a House Call. lol
For years, I've tuned up PC's for a living, and I can usually double the effective speed of any PC, by just doing some tweaking and tuning. And of course, eliminate all the JUNK on your computer.

On my own PC, I try to minimize the load on my CPU, especially when I'm downloading a new OS/ISO or some other LARGE file. I even shut own my AV/AS software, as long as I trust the download site.

I wish you luck!
