OpenGL classified as legacy?

Legacy Graphics (Windows)

I was looking through the Win32 API tutorials on MSDN when I found this. I wanted to draw some graphics on my form, and was a bit surprised to run into it...

Description of the section in which I found this:

Technologies that are obsolete and should not be used in new applications.

Is this a sign that Microsoft may stop supporting OpenGL in Windows in the future? :shock:

Hmm...this is new to me, but if Microsoft is going to stop supporting anything, it's just their own implementation of OpenGL. I confess to being surprised they even had one, I for one have never been aware of anything other than the OpenGL support built into videocard drivers from ATI and nVidia.

OpenGL itself is thriving and well evolved - AFAIK there is no reliance on any Microsoft-specific code for using it, be it in games or desktop applications.

If someone knows more about this, I'll be glad to stand corrected

This is exactly why I'm confused to see OpenGL listed in the Legacy section. A Google search brought me to this:

They might have had basic OpenGL drivers shipped with earlier versions of Windows, before the days of Quake III etc. In fact, now that I think of it I think I did see such driver files in Windows 98 SE...not sure about XP though.

So, it would be calling THAT legacy, and not the drivers which come with video card drivers? That would make sense. If this is the case, I wish Microsoft would be a bit less ambiguous with the MSDN documentation...

Yep - I'm almost positive that's what they mean.
