How do I open ports inside windows 7? I know in Windows Vista there's supposed to be an Add Ports button in Control Panel/All Control Panel Items/Windows Firewall/Allowed Programs but in 7 there is no button for this, all you can do is add programs but you can't open specific ports.

when you are there, click on "Advanced Settings"
"Inbound Rules" or "outbound rules"
double-click on a program name
click on "Protocols and Ports" tab

(I haven't used this, I just found it.)

The change settings button is disabled because UAC is disabled ;)

The button you clicked is for changing allowed applications, in the Windows Firewall main menu click "Advanced Settings" instead if you want to change an applications port settings ;)

a little tip if you have ESET Smart Security 4
(firewall, antivirus etc.. It's the best program I have!)

all you have to do is to click " Setup > Advanced Personal firewall setup > Interactive mode. Then all the programs will pop up and all you have to do is accept the connections! :)

(I made the account just to say that, so hope you enjoy it! :sarc: )

uTorrent does that itself, goto Options> Preferences and tick the Add Firewall Exception box. If its already ticked, untick it and exit utorrent then start it back up and repeat the procedure. ;)

If the ports still dont open, look at your adsl/cable router's firewall configuration.

Hey, what if there's that really annoying error that I can't seem to fix that is not allowing one to use the Advanced Settings?

Error is: MMC will not run with a version of IE earlier than Internet 5.5.

The problem being that I have IE8 that came with Win7 OS when I installed it.

A reply would be highly appreciated, thanks!

@samaiya - Can you provide some screen shots? If you fill in your System Specs, a lot of times that helps us find a problem too. - Thanks - WS

Try this: Add to this Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
and edit the Version Key. If it does not exist create it REG_SZ and enter anything that is above version 5.5.

You can set it to: 8.0.7600.16385 which is Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7.

Typically one would use the Registry Editor to edit the Registry and make the change. However if you are not familiar with it or have never used it I created a .REG file. You need to be logged on as Administrator, or be using an Administrator account or use the Run As to add this file to the registry.

Just double click on it and answer yes.
