Solved Opening web address given by e-mail

When I click on a web address sent by e-mail a box pops up and says "This file does not have a program to open blah blah--------".This has only started recently so can someone help?.

Archers suggestion failed to help but has left me with a file named "Search Protect" which is sticking like a burr to a blanket,thank you!!.

Can you open web pages or local html files with your brower?

Right click the object in the eMail, select properties and paste that information in a new post.

I can't tell what it is from your description (a web address) or what application should try to open it. Just because it looks like a web address, doesn't mean it is.

As a test, see if setting Internet Explorer as the default program with all of it's associations may be able to help.

Pleased to advise that things seem to be working o.k.again and I wish to thank all who have proffered help.Have also managed to eject "SearchProtect" but had to use a combination of command prompt and taskmanager.

To be quite honest I am not too sure which was the magic elixir because like a fool and in sheer desperation I tried several regardless of consequences as I was on the verge of doing a reinstall.

What a day!!!.My apologies to all who have offered help on this problem and for thinking I had solved it.Finally found the real culprit and guess what it was!,Internet Explorer 11.Also had a hell of a job removing it but once it had gone and I went back to IE 10 then my problem with clicking on those address's vanished.Methinks I have had trouble with IE 11 before but there is one thing for sure,I ain't going there again.

I did suspect that it was due to over zealous security measures and you have confirmed that assumption but I would also suggest that is going too far.It would be o.k. to offer a warning but it becomes dictatorial and it decides what the user can do and not do,so where does it stop?.

I don't think the security features in IE 11 (using TLS 1.2 by default) would cause the issue in post 1.

That issue says "No associated program..."

The TLS 1.2 issues would report differently (I tested TLS 1.2 only on IE 9 - most web sites worked fine, only a few required TLS 1.0, and even less required SSL 3.0 - that's how my IE is configured now).

I'd still like to know the properties of the suspect object in the eMail. Additionally, are there any error or warning entries in the event viewer that might shed more light on the issue.

I'm just digging for more inforrmation in case another member has a similar issue.

If IE 10 is an acceptable workaround - great. You can mark this thread as solved.

The best example of the problem I experienced with IE 11 was when I would receive an answer from one of you and I was given a thread to click on and then the big ugly box would pop up saying I did not have a program to open that thread.Yet when I reinstalled IE 10 I could click on those threads and hey presto they opened.I leave the conclusion to you.

These could be two distinct issues - one is an eMail client (local or Web based) and the other is browser. Of course if you use a web based eMail client that would fall into the browser category.

My e-mail is handled by Windows Live Mail and never had any trouble with them.I probably was wrong to use the word web address and should have just said thread so please accept my apologies if I have been misleading in any way.But to reiterate,what failed to work in IE 11 now works in IE 10.No contest.

Sooo, I have two follow up questions - thanks for the clarity on eMail client.
What version of WLM are you running?
and going back to ... a thread to click on ...
Was the thread in an eMail msg or were you on SF and clicked on a reference link?

Either way points to MSHTML. I'm helping some other members with IE 11 and others with Winmail issues. Every bit of information I get might help them (or not).

Was on SF and clicked on reference link.Would not work on IE 11 but o.k.on IE 10.Did not know there was various levels of Windows Live Mail and installed what came with Microsoft Essentials.As a matter of interest,just a few moments ago when I clicked on my mail icon to open it refused to work.Switched computer off and then back on and the mail icon worked,any idea why?.
