My dvd burner: Optiarc 7580s
PC Acer 5515 laptop running windows 7 32-bit Ultimate

Ever since I upgraded to win7, I can not burn DVDs. I can burn CDs fine and read cds and dvds. When I try to burn onto a new blank dvd using the default win7 dvd maker, it says it is formatting the dvd and it never finishes. The red x is faded the whole time its formatting so I close it with task manager and everything freezes and the task-bar disappears and reloads.

When using ImgBurn, it says it formats ok but then has errors (Log shown at the bottom of this post.

UltraIso claims to burn the dvd just fine but when I look at DVD drive in "computer" it still shows as blank DVD.

I have tried updating the driver, uninstalling the driver and rebooting, using the windows troubleshoot for reading/burning dvds and the Microsoft Mr Fixit but nothing has worked so far. Any advice would be helpful, Thanks.

Maybe check to see if the drive has updated firmware.

Open Imgburn... then click on a task menu(create image file from disc will do)

Then click on the tools tab, move down to drive, and then select check for firmware updates.

I hope this helps.... Report back and let us know what's going on.

Hi, I tried that and it did download a newer firmware update and then reinstalled the driver. However it is still doing the same thing.

It seems to not be formatting. It never completes the formatting in Windows dvd burner and even though it says formatting is successful in ImgBurn, it still says disc needs formatted everytime I load the dvd.

When UltraISO says it successfully completes burning a DVD, Have you looked at the DVD to see if there is information written to it? I've had times Windows doesn't recognise a disc untill I eject it and reload it.

Is this pretty much a fresh install of 7? Had the problem started after installing a burning suite?

I just tried UltraIso and it opens automatically after burning. When I close it, it still shows blank. I had downloaded nero but later uninstalled it and the only things I have now are ImgBurn and UltraISO. However, now that I think about it, it did burn DVD-R's but when I ran out of those I bought DVD+RWs so they could be erased and reused but on the outside of the drive, it says DVD RW so I wouldn't think that would be an issue and they work fine on my desktop.
