In my Win7 taskbar the items represent programs that I use and also messages from my email client. Is it possible to keep the order of these items constant (e.g. browser followed by email client followed by messages)?

Hi Odin,

Yes, I think that it is possible. You can drag these "shortcuts" where ever you want them on the taskbar. :)

Thanks, Chuck, but you misconstrued my question. The items can indeed by dragged, but they won't stay as placed. I wanted to know if there's any way of keeping the order permanent.

You can pin the programs to the taskbar and then the placement should stay the same.
Right click on a taskbar icon to see the Pin... option.
I'm not sure about email messages.
I'm using Outlook 2010 and the messages group with the Outlook icon for me.

2 multi-boot PC's
Mainly HTPC/Office/Gen purpose (no gaming).
Trendnet USB KVM.
LG DVD burner/Blue Ray Player.
Tray system for removable SATA backup drives.

Not currently OCd, under-volted.
I use Hybrid sleep, rarely re-boot or shutdown.

Hauppauge HD-PVR, Avermedia PCIe TV Tuner, Hauppauge PCI TV Tuner.
I right-click a program's icon/shortcut and choose Pin to Taskbar or Pin to Start menu then I can drag to move them in the order desired. Those programs aren't opened yet but the icons stay put when the programs are opened, i.e. no other icons show on the Taskbar, but if opening two or more instances of a program they will show as stacked, one mostly behind the other. The area immediately to the right of the Start button where the icons are pinned used to be called the Quick Launch Toolbar.

Thanks, all.

I guess I wasn't completely clear about the issue. For example, Callender says "...pinned items can be re-ordered. I'm not sure why that doesn't work for you." It does work for me. I can re-order to my heart's content. My issue is the need to reorder, as the taskbar shortcuts' order do not persist. I'm simply wondering if there's something I can do to eliminate that need. These programs are pinned. (The messages of course are not. I use Windows Live Mail, although I hope eventually to find a better replacement—it's the world's worst email program. I'd use Outlook except that I can't afford and can't otherwise use Microsoft Office.)

I believe that the changes take place upon system restart. A screen shot will only show the shortcuts where they are now (which is where I want them).

I didn't know Quick Launch was still available in Win7, in view of the pinning capability. I'll look into that.

You probably know about the various E-Mail Clients one can install but a lesser known one that looks pretty good and is free comes with Mozilla's SeaMonkey [Internet Browser]. It has its own shortcut/icon in Start, All Programs, SeaMonkey, SeaMonkey Mail.
