This has been a problem for over a year now. 140+ identical PCs running identical images, with identical keyboards. Some have the problem, some do not, and it's incredibly unpredictable.

PCs are HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF running Windows 7 x64 Professional.

People will be working at their PC, hear the USB disconnect sound, and their keyboard will become unusable for 30+ seconds.

An Event with ID 219 is created in the Event Log:

Description:
The driver \Driver\kbdhid failed to load for the device HID\VID_03F0&PID_0324\7&3c64d09&0&0000.

For those affected, the frequency of the error runs anywhere from 10 times a day to once every few weeks.

Re-imaging the PC has no effect but that same image running on another PC with the same hardware can run without ever experiencing the problem. The system I use has not experienced the problem once in over a year.

I have rebuilt the image from scratch and pushed it out to a group of people experiencing the error. It seemed to resolve it for a few months and then the errors inexplicably came back. I've tried replacing the keyboards with completely different models. Again, it seemed to resolve it for a while and then it came back.

Moving the keyboard to different physical ports has no effect.
Turning off USB power saving has no effect.
The mouse never has a similar issue.

I have not been able to recreate the issue with the default factory image from HP, but aside from all the pre-installed garbage that image cannot be used with our license to image through WDS. It is also not practical to determine if the problem actually does not exist in their image, or if it is one of the many cases where the problem is just not occurring. Many times I've thought I've had a resolution to the problem only to have it come back weeks later.

HP support has been no help since we can't point to the issue happening with their image.

The keyboard shows in Device Manager as "HID Keyboard Device" using the driver files kbdclass.sys and kbdhid.sys.

Searching Google shows many other people experiencing the issue but not a single applicable solution.

Any suggestions?

I know this may sound simple; but have you tried completely uninstalling the keyboard from device manager; then let windows reinstall it? That may fix the issue. If not then post back.

Also have a pretty bad speaker setup which is a klipsch promedia 5.1 surround speaker setup with huge subwoofer and lg blu ray player/writer. Also a hp officejet pro 8600 plus wireless all in one and a logitech s7500 webcam.
I'm pretty sure I've done that at some point in the past but I'll give it another shot in the interest of being thorough.

Check if you are running the latest BIOS. Reinstall the latest chipset drivers

Latest BIOS has had no effect, most recent chipset drivers from the website are the same version as what's already installed.

Haven't had a chance to retry uninstalling the keyboard from device manager. It's difficult to get on the PCs of those most affected, and troubleshooting on the PCs of those least affected is aggravating when it can take days/weeks to be sure of any improvement, or lack thereof.

This issue has persisted across a complete rebuild of the image from scratch in the past, so I would tend to believe that simply un/reinstalling the built-in drivers will have minimal effect unless I have something from outside the install media to replace them with.
