I upgraded to Office 2013 a number of months ago and have a problem I can't find the answer to that has finally driven me crazy enough to ask about.

In the navigation pane you have the mailbox with all it's sub folders (inbox, sent, deleted etc.) I collapse the mailbox and work primarily out of PST folders and the Inbox, Sent, and Deleted links in the Favorites section above this.

Randomly the mailbox will expand so I can see all these folders again. Not sure why - I'm guessing it's from things like an email auto-saved to Drafts - when the mailbox expands the main PST folder I use drop out of site and I have to scroll down to them (such a big hassle right?)

Outlook 2010 had no issues with this, you collapse the mailbox it stayed that way until outlook was closed and opened again or you manually expanded the mailbox folder list. Is there a way to keep the mailbox collapsed?

I haven't noticed this myself, but maybe if you add these other folders to favorites, it might help. I mean Drafts for example.

Sorry for the late response, it's been kind of hectic around the office lately.

I tried adding drafts to the favorites but it still expands my mailbox causing the frequently used folders to drop below the frame and have to be scrolled to.

I did notice if I do a search it makes the mailbox expand and searches all folders instead of just my inbox or sent items I want to search. So I'm guessing that's when my mailbox is expanded.

I changed the search option to Current Folder from Current Mailbox and it hasn't expanded the mailbox on a search in the last couple days.

I'm going to say it's fixed. :)
