Outlook is bleak

Hi Folks. All has been copacetic for a long time now until problems with Outlook - which is my primary email facility - have finally begun to irritate me. I have it set to look for mail every few minutes but half the time it comes up with an error. When I click the send/receive button the window says 6 out of 7 tasks completed, then it says 2 out of 2 tasks completed and performs correctly. It also takes a long time to file emails away into archive folders even though I have storage set on my OS SSD. That was not an easy task because it had installed with storage on D which is my 1tb HDD but my techie friend got it sorted for me - I think! Any help grovelingly accepted. Cheers.

A little more info would be helpful for when one of the mail experts comes along.

1) I assume you are taking about Outlook the program and not the webmail service, if that's the case what version of outlook are you using.
2) I take it you are querying pop3 servers, have you thought of switching to the more efficient imap servers that don't require checking every few minutes?

Hi Zee, this is what I'm using: MS Office Pro Plus 2010. Outlook version: 14.0.7015.1000 (64bt)
I'm afraid I didn't understand the difference between the webmail version and this program assuming there is a one. As for the POP/IMAP question, I am ignorant I'm afraid but I do have a tech who could do the necessary if it's desirable; sounds like it.

Microsoft in their wisdom rebranded the old hotmail webmail service as Outlook just to cause a bit of confusion.

IMAP mail is delivered instantly and you can have all your mail synced on all your devices at once (PC, laptop, phone all show the same email), POP is the old archaic mail you need to check for every x minutes and doesn't sync over multiple devices.

Have a word with your guy and see if he can swap you over to imap, this will elimination the send and receive button and it checking for mail every x minutes.

been thinking about this IMAP issue and thought I'd better add that I use Virgin as an ISP and I can access all my emails via their site as well as them being retrieved by Outlook. They all stay on my Virgin site until I want to remove them but if I retrieve them from my phone they don't get downloaded by Outlook.

Virgin/NTL/Blueyonder all have imap, and if you went the imap route even if you retrieved on your phone they would still be on outlook and the website.

Thank-you Zee; I will take my time and investigate: perhaps I can understand this myself.
BTW did you know that Butch Cassidy's father came from Preston and his mother from up here on Tyneside?

I feel I have areas of ignorance here that could get me into trouble; I'd better have my techie oversee this transition and explain the ramifications. I've still got to sort out these problems with Outlook.
