Hello, well I managed to over clock my processor, Intel Celron M 520, in my curent laptop which is a Acer Aspire 3680. Now my question is: is it safe to try and get to the 2.00Ghz mark. Curently it is overclocked to 1898.7 MHz.
Here are the temps:
Idle----------------------69C
normal use---------------74C
high use-----------------87C
exteme(SETI@HOME)-----98C

forgot to mention the default clock speed was 1.6GHz
now what do you guys think?

Max operating temp for that processor is 100C. You are pretty close to that at stress times. I wouldnt be surprised if the lappy is shutting down randomly even at the current clock speed, if running at high perf all the time.

You can give 2.0ghz a shot, but I dont think you can run that in a sustainable or practically useful way, unless you use the comp for light use only.

and do you really want your fan to run at 100% all the time?

enjoy your extra hertz, but don't crank it up any more.

i've got my 3gig processor running at 4 - i'm pretty sure it can go quite a bit higher, but i'm happy as i am with a quiet-running and ultra-stable machine. :)

plus you'll never notice the difference between 1.9 and 2 - what's that, 5%?

that last 5% may well do harm, but you won't notice 5% benefit.

Yes, please do. A picture is worth a thousand words, so the next time someone asks if they should overclock their laptop, all we'll have to do is link to this page.

okay ill try to remember that ;) but so far its running "okay" somewhat hot, but I was going to throw it out when my new laptop gets here so I decided to try and squeez a litle but more juice out of it. ohh and I did some testing. when i have my processor at default 1.6 GHz it still heats up to 94C when running prolonged processor intensive apps. for example SETI@HOME

Hey Ionbasa,

How did you manage to overclock your old Acer's Celeron M? I've got a very similar laptop (Acer Aspire 3690) and can't manage to do it! The Phoenix BIOS have the clock & voltages locked so I can't modify them. Also, Clockgen and setFSB didn't work for me either (I think I'm using the right PLL (# ICS9LPRS365BGLF), but when I make a change to the clock & hit update nothing happens. Is it because Acer has the clock locked somehow?).

You're advice would be very much appreciated! I've scoured the internet for help & I'm about ready to give up...

Thanks!

trust me don't overclock a laptop... mine was overclocked for a while and even if it doesn't reach max temps... being close up there may cause a black hole in your motherboard (it happened to me with a with turion x2)

ionbasa,
You're working hard towards a new computer and that's excellent the economy needs more people purchasing goods. When you blow up your current rig have you had a chance to decide if you'll replace it with another laptop or a desktop.....just saying. Maybe you already have your replacement monies saved and if this is the case then I would overclock to 2.5 or higher and video tape the event......oh you might want to move it outside so you don't burn your house down!

Yeah, I know. Everyone says not to overclock laptops. But this one is old & about to be junked anyway (I mean recycled :)). I wouldn't try overclocking a real laptop.

First of all, this thread was dedicated to my old Acer laptop, I have another Acer now, the one in my specs.:p

Secondly the OC method is using FSB, anything above 1.99GHz is impossible, I have tried.

Thirdly I take no responsibility, anything that happens is your fault,( general disclaimer).

Fourthly the Acer Aspire 3680 regarded in this thread has been retired to a mini home server running a website and SETI@Home.

Fifth I replaced the thermal compound on that laptop with AC5, there was silicone goop on there that was no good and it was crusted:sick:.
