Solved Overheating after new hard drive and clean install

On a clean install I have read to speed thinks up you should 1st, manually install IE 11 and all its updates, 2nd, manually install KB3138612, 3rd only install 50 updates at a time from Windows Update. It's still not as fast as it use to be but its better than waiting 8 hours.

Hi. Yes I saw that recommended somewhere and did that, but am now wondering if it has caused an issue with installing the updates. Probably not, but I'm starting again and will just wait as long as it takes to get them all downloaded. I just hope they install this time.

That makes sense that they will think less people are installing Windows 7 so have reduced server capacity (or whatever it is). Not on really when it is supposed to be supported until 2020, which presumably means a degree of acceptable service. It's certainly different from a couple of years ago when I installed W7 on quite a few laptops. The only one I had an issue with was an Eee PC which didn't like IE11 when it first came out.

As I can't put a fast hard drive in this laptop, I am tempted to get a new one, but - I don't think I want Windows 10 really! So I shall be patient with this one for now.

Install going well now. I started again and the updates came through quite quickly today (in a couple of hours). Don't know if that's a fluke. The only two things I did different were:

• Let Windows update download and install MSE instead of installing antivirus myself - which I reckon should be fine for the doing the updates and then I'll swap it for another antivirus.
• Set Windows updates to the second option rather than the third (ie download updates but let me choose whether to install them)

If anyone's doing the updates from scratch, this is what the pattern seems to be at the moment (for my machine anyway). The first few updates come through quite quickly and include a small update for Service Pack one. Then the second lot come through fairly quickly and include the full Service Pack one update, and .net framework 4.

After these are installed there is the long wait and Windows Update searching. Today it took less than 2 hours, but has taken more than 8 hours (or overnight). So I've got the bulk of it done in half a day.

Hard drive hasn't overheated and turned off. It runs hotter than the original drive still. I had a response from the Sony forum which says the VPCCW2S1E needs a hard drive of the same size and type. So it sounds like it is limited to the same size drive at the same speed and an older format like Sata I or II. Very limiting. But at least I have a new drive in it.

All updated nicely and smoothly. Final updates done about 24 hours after I started the install.

I don't know if using MSE instead of a different antivirus, helped or not, or if that was just a coincidence. MSE uninstalled cleanly afterwards. I couldn't be bothered to check every single 'recommended' update so had to go back and uninstall the W10 ones from the list on here (thanks!)
