Page Fault in nonpaged area, keyboard/mouse wont work outside BIOS

OK so I was watching TV on my PC last night, woke up to find PC had restarted itself, I shutdown from the login screen. Now when trying to bootup, it gives a warning, prompting me to run startup repair, if I do this it runs & gives option to do system restore, but I cannot do it as the mouse & keyboard won't work! If I try and start windows normally I get the BSOD with "Page Fault in nonpaged area" warning at the top. Have tried booting from Windows 7 DVD but again the mouse & keyboard won't work, they only work in the BIOS, would appreciate some help, thanks!

Well now you say your keyboard and mouse only works in bios but what you don't tell is what (exactly) is your keyboard and mouse.

What mouse and keyboard are you using?:?

Do you have a PS2 keyboard?

From what I found you should have this.

thanks for reply, I have a Microsoft USB Mouse & Keyboard. I tried unplugging the mouse when it was logged onto the startup repair and plugging back in & it worked! It ran the repair but it said it said it couldnt fix the problem, I assume it also couldn't run system restore which I cant imagine is good.

However, it then restarted & logged back into windows with everything working, but warned me about the error & sent data to MS. I checked my SSD and the firmware was out of date so I updated, I also ran the memtest bootdisk which found no errors so I'm a bit baffled as to what caused this (I also ran Kaspersky rescue disk which loaded with mouse & keyboard fine but I presume that's linux based?).

Make sure you are up to date with Windows 7 Updates.
Microsoft mouse and key boards drivers are kept up to date with Windows Updates.
How often do you shut down your computer or reboot your computer?
Looking at your specs your computer should boot very fast so no need for sleep.
Computers like being booted.

Keep us informed how thing are going for a while. We are open 24/7.

It would be helpful if you could add your power supply, case, cpu cooler ect. to your System Specs.
Look at my system specs. It will give you a idea what you can add.

It is a good thing to keep a PS2 mouse and keyboard around just in case.
You can pick them up pretty cheep.
Some times when you have problems like you just had it the only way to get things going again.

Thanks for your reply. I have a Corsair CX600M, Silverstone case. By a repeated method of trial & error I think I am narrowing the problem down, but it seems bizarre . If I remove all external powered devices, the mouse & keyboard work in the Windows startup repair, it does then do system restore (I could see that windows updates I was installing kept disappearing), and the computer seems normal. I can connect my small powered USB hub with a USB satellite TV box attached, everything is still OK....

BUT....if I connect the Canon scanner to USB or connect the 2nd satellite cable to the PCI E card, I get the "Page Fault in nonpaged area" BSOD on Windows startup!!?? Another weirdness is even if the power supply is switched off, if I slightly connect the USB cable from the scanner to each USB port I get a lot of crackling through the speakers, even though the motherboard is not on?! Does this sound like something has been electrically fked up on the motherboard somehow?

Its funny you should say it should fast boot, I expected it to, but I always have to wait almost 10 seconds for the USB keyboard to come alive so I can type the password on the Windows login screen....maybe the USB on this motherboard was always dodgy??

How about something is wrong with your scanner. How old is the scanner?
You can get R.F. frequencies through speakers whether they have power or not.

The way I would test the system if it was my computer would be unplug the extra stuff.
Keep the printer, scanner, extra satellite cable, toaster, refrigerator or what ever is plugged into the computer unplugged. No usb hubs.

Use it a while and get all the updates needed and run the scans needed. Then add one piece of hardware at a time.
Run it a day or two to make sure things work as they should. Then add another piece of hardware and do the same thing.
I wouldn't have a usb hub hooked to my computer. As far as I'm concerned they are a problem looking for a place to roost.

To record one channel while you are watching another, at least in the UK you need two.

Seems unlikely, less than a year old, although I haven't used it much. The speakers were on, and the scanner, although not buttoned on it was on on the power socket, the PSU was off I just thought it odd the two would connect.

That's pretty much exactly what I did. Since the scanner connected by USB & the satellite cable on PCI-E card seem to have the same destabilizing effect, surely it points to some electrical instability in the motherboard? They surely can't both be faulty & causing exactly the BSOD.

Yes, it's an Anker 4 port. I am now getting BSODs with nothing connected except the mouse, keyboard & monitor, so I don't think it's the hub, or anything external.

I had the exact same issue yesterday and again today. I custom built my system 3 weeks ago. I did not have any issues installing OS and all system files. No issues what so ever until yesterday. I had the exact same issue that was mentioned by OP(blue screen, no keyboard/mouse). I took out all memory, graphics cards, and one by one reinstalled each. I was able to eventually system restore to 5 days ago. I then reinstalled the remainder of the components. I restarted multiple times yesterday. I thought I remedied the problem. I shut down last night and this morning upon restart I had the same problem again.

Just hoping we come to some resolution on this. I am at work for the next few hours but as soon as I return I will continue to troubleshoot.

You need to rebuild the font cache. Go to C:\Windows\System32\ and delete the "Fntcache.dat" file there. Then restart the computer. On restart, a fresh font cache will be built.

If you cannot access to the fonts folder in normal mode, try in safe mode and safe mode with command prompt (see http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html). In Safe Mode also does not work (usually it works), try a live linux like Puppy.

Hopefully the issue will be over.

Aha! Yeah I just twigged after my latest BSOD I better NOT install the 12th Aug updates again :shock: ..or can I and just delete the font cache and it'll be OK?

Um well, this is fun, I just left my PC with TV tuner running for a few minutes, having NOT reinstalled the updates, and I got a complete PC freeze, with accompanying buzzing drone noise. So it looks like even after a restore it has caused some permanent damage either to my PC or to my Windows install, can I sue Microsoft ...

So I installed the updates, renamed fntcache.dat to fntcache.old, rebooted OK, now it has made a new fntcache.dat which seems to be identical to the old one.....:huh:
