Pagefile.sys

I have always used a fixed pagefile on a second disk and because I have only 4 GB of memory I have not tried to run without one. The only problem I could find that perhaps related to size was when I reduced the pagefile to 1 GB and had the system automatically log me out once. Not sure if this was the problem but increasing it to 2 GB (currently running) has not seen this happen again. I prefer to keep the pagefile fixed and small so that I can ensure no data is ever likely to be vulnerable - it is either encrypted or wiped on shutdown or both. Performance is not the sole issue.

    :)

I am a programmer/developer for the .NET Framework. Personally, my rule of thumb for Win7 x64 platforms is if you have 8gb or more : set you pagefile to 1/2 the amount of installed physical RAM. If you have 4gb installed RAM : set you pagefile to match installed physical RAM. If less than 4gb installed physical RAM : set your page file 2-4 times your installed physical RAM. I would not suggest letting windows manage your pagefile as it is not contigious and is not efficiently defragmented. Always set your your min/max equal to each other. Also, I would recommend using a reputable 3rd party Defrag Utility ( such as O & O Defragmenter or Diskkeeper ) instead of the built-in windows defragmenter & to perform a boot-time defragmentation & then run the defragmenter from within windows.
