Pagefule size with 6GB ram

I have a new laptop with pre-installed W 7 Home Premium 64 bit and 6 GB of ram. I am assuming that with this much ram I may not need the default pagefile size.

What would be a reasonable pagefile size in a PC with 6 G of ram?

The reason I ask is because I like to delete the pagefile on shutdown and with a large pagefile this makes shutdown take a very long time.

Hello,

Windows 7 can handle its memory management pretty well, actually. Since so much can be put into your RAM, the result is that your page file will not be used that much.

Anyway, if you just leave the page file alone, you should get plenty of performance.

Now, take it or leave it, but the bottom line is that it does not matter much. You can delete it altogether, make it small, or do whatever you want with it.

What do you forsee as the big advantage to deleting it on every shutdown? I have 8GBZ of RAM and although it's probably hardly ever touched, I set my page file manually to 1.5x my RAM, so 12GB.

a good rule of thumb is to use a page file approx 100% the size of the installed RAM.

The reason is that most of the data is loaded on to the page file and the OS will only need to load stuff on application start up.

Don't confuse this with a Linux SWAP file -- swapping is another issue entirely - the swap file on Linux should be approx 50% of the installed RAM.

Swapping occurs with multi-users when a users "Address space" is copied to disk in its entirety.

Paging occurs when some data (for any logged on user) can't be held in RAM and is temporarily copied to disk so another process can use spare RAM when the original process is not running or temporarily suspended whilst another process can run.

You shouldn't run WITHOUT a paging file - even if you have plenty of RAM --The OS NEEDS this file.

I believe it is a security risk if the laptop is stolen. I have some financial data on the laptop. The financial data is in an encrypted file, but when I use it remnants of data may remain in the pagefile.
