Paragon Free Backup (V10) - takes too long

Hi all
This might not be an issue for you - especially as it looks like a great FREE program but the amount of backups and restores I do I need it to work FAST.

Laptop - W7 X-64 partition (the OS not my data) 50 GB approx 27 GB used.

Paragon backup time 58 Mins
Acronis True Image 14 Mins

Both run at Max compression.

Although I have to PAY for acronis for me the vastly superior speed its worth it.

Don't get me wrong Paragon Backup seems fine if you can afford the time - and it also gives you a bootable "bare Metal" recovery.

Some of the "RAW" options might be interesting but I can't say I've ever needed or used this type of process.

Up to you -- Good software but seems a tad too slow compared with the commercial competition.

However - in any case please guys ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR SYSTEM (and data - inc music collections etc).

I can only confirm your experience. I have tried Paragon products a number of times on different operating systems and they always been extremely slow. It finally came to the point that I made a promise to myself never to install a Paragon product again. I am now a happy Acronis user.

I found this too after trying Paragon though I didn't try a restore with it.

The backup took longer than the built in W7 one so I'm now downloading the Acronis 2010 trial.

I've used Acronis for years on my previous PC's and it never let me down so I'll see how I go with that.

Creating a backup image/archive took 5 minutes. This was for a file size of 7Gb.

I also blew away that partition and reloaded it via the Paragon Boot CD it created. Only took 10-15 minutes and it was fully restored.

Is the built in Windows 7 backup program good? I am still setting up my system, don't really want to attempt a backup-restore just yet hehe.

I've used Windows 7 imaging program to both backup and restore two machines. It works very nicely. The backup takes a bit of time (I suspect because it is shadowing the HD for active programs). It took about an hour to image my systems - one was a desktop with Office 2007 loaded. Three DVDs. On the restore, things went much faster - about 5 min per DVD.

Well, I've had a lovely day with ATi..

I decided to restore to an image I did yesterday....fired up ATi, chose the image i wanted to use etc etc

It rebooted and started the restore then told me it was completed in 2 seconds flat then rebooted again and...nothing....just a flashing white cursor. i restarted a few times and the same thing :shock:

I put the boot disc in and loaded Acronis again, had a look at the HD and nothing on it at all just marked as unallocated space

Luckily I had an image made with the W7 inbuilt Imaging so managed to restore with that.

Not quite sure why or what actually went wrong, I could explore the image I was trying to restore to after but after that I could never trust it again so its in the bin and back to the W7 one for me.

Paragon Backup programs do not have an option to increase Priority. I agree it would be nice if they did. I have asked about this and will ask again.

Paragon DB10 Server images at about 1gb per min. on my system using Normal compression level.


Other apps. can be made to go faster - if you check the cpu usage during backup operation - you will see why.

I believe this is a design choice - mostly they sell to business clients, I believe. They are interested in low resource usage, Reliabiliy and functionality. Paragon is less reource intense than Acronis - if you set them to the same speed.

DB10 Free is certainly the most complete free backup app. available - it is also very reliable.

If you want something fast - try Macrium - the fastest there is. Macrium is also less resource intense than Acronis.

Paragon and Macrium have very good FREE programs available to all. Acronis does not.

Use whichever you prefer.
