I've been saying that for a while now. It's a wrinkle even Darrell Huff didn't think of.

It would be good to have a comprehensive listing of all the technological improvements in the operating systems compared to Windows 7.
Most of the websites I have visited focus exclusively on the GUI, Applications, and convenience (debatable) features. But I am talking about under-the-hood geek stuff. I have found this kind of information hard to find.

For instance, I know that Windows 8 has native USB 3.0 support. No need for 3rd party drivers. It's plug and play. A huge improvement over Windows 7.
Each OS is going to support more hardware natively with built in drivers, so we 7 people are really cut off in 2009 in that respect.
Universal search is a nice improvement also.
In Windows 8 and 10 there is faster start up. About a third of the time faster.
Windows 10 has virtual desktops, which could be a practical tool.

I think if we knew what is to be gained from the new OS in terms of performance and compatibility in making the move up it would greatly smooth the road. Just presenting another pretty face on an OS that is perceived as doing the same thing as 7 is not the way to sell the product, me thinks.

More important would be a comprehensive list of what user LOSE by going to W10.

Based on what I have read, most of what we would lose falls into the "look and feel" category. In terms of functionality and technology we would start at the 7 platform and add from there.

There is the possibility that we could lose functionality in that, say, a parallel port device could no longer be compatible, but I am assuming that we are moving up in the hardware world, not trying to stay in the 90's!

EDIT: let me point out here that I never moved to Windows 8 because of those "look and feel" issues. So I hear you. Right now I'm ready to accept the ugly face to get the advanced tech.

Something else I have alway wondered; Windows 8 and Windows 10 touch screen. How do you right tick.
Right tick opens a world of things we work with all the time.

So far all I know what one gains with Windows 10.

1. It will talk to you.
2. It's easy to sync everything including your coffee pot.
3. You can have the joy of a lot of colored squares.
4. If you have enough money you can make the side of your house a holograph screen if you buy special head gear.
5. Every time you type something Bing jumps up with a lot of websites.
6. You no longer have the bothersome and terrible Control Panel or all those ugly icons.
7. If you hold your mouth just right a panel will pop out of the right side of the screen.
8. The big thing you gain is you now can have just about everything in a Cloud and then have prayer session to insure the internet doesn't go down when you want to do something.

The tech level improvements don't mean much if the GUI is mung.

It may be worth starting this as a discussion on its own Bob. Maybe Ten Forums would be a better place? That's not detracting from your questions (I'm interested too) or from the people who've responded so far, I just think it's a worthwhile discussion in its own right.

The GUI has to be right. That is the first thing people see and if it turns them off, the OS goes nowhere. Improvements under the hood are welcome but will be unnoticeable for many people. New function can be important for those segments of the market that need them. But the average user is rarely looking for the kind of new function they offer. Who has a 3D printer.

In Windows 8 and 10 there is faster start up. About a third of the time faster.

I didn't try Hybrid boot when I used the W8 previews (I used VHDs).
Its standard boot was about ~10 seconds faster than W7 on my PC.

The performance improvements seemed to be highly variable.
Some users claimed big improvements and others claimed their PCs were slower.
It didn't seems slower, but I don't think it was obviously faster on my PC

My W10TP VMs seemed to boot fairly quickly (~20s).
However they slowed down considerably once I installed a few programs (>50s).

Windows 10 has virtual desktops, which could be a practical tool.

IMO, they still aren't as handy as the Linux Distro virtual desktops, but at least MS has improved them since b9841.

Who has a 3D printer.

My friend bought one.
He uses Arch Linux though.

I have no idea on the touchscreen part.

1. What is Cortana MS is keeping up

2. OneDrive, you do not have to use it. You can use it in W7 too. I don't have a "smart coffee pot"

3. You can use a desktop and customize things

4. Personally I thing the new HOLO technology is cool

5. You can limit Bing intergration

6. Control panel is still there

7. Charming

8. This is where technology is going. You do not have to use the cloud, it is an option

I like Windows 10. I like windows 8.1, Window 7, and I liked Windows vista. I liked xp, 98, and 95.

What is sums up to is I like rolling with the changes. My whole point is people get set in their ways and don't want change. That works for a while, but eventually you have to change. Rather than complain, I learn to adapt.

I did not see anything faster than win-7 installed on a ssd,
I actually saw win-10 slower at startup if you get rid of the lock screen via group policy.

The fast startup features are what killed my hdd
I would prefer an os to completely shut down as I shut down and not pretend to just be a Instant go or some new hibernate state awaiting to startup where you left off.

I'd also prefer 10 not to reset setting simply having to reboot which 10 reset boot to -0- seconds after major updates
That's not very helpful especially if a booting problem occurs for whatever reason -0- seconds makes getting to bios irritatingly difficult

I think the updates did something as my Windows 8.1 tablet showed a notification on the top right screen that read "Windows 10 is ready"! But when I clicked it, it opened Windows Update with 2 updates available which wasn't anything to do with Windows 10! How strange! I would show a pic but it won't let me add a picture of the notification.

why vmware? you could native boot w10 in a vhd[x] file container. It has the same effect as being in an isolated vm, but runs at native speed. I ain't never gonna install w8+ on a real partition again thanks to this feature.

If you can't attach a screen print,
As a new SF member maybe you can't attach a screen print "yet", not enough SF posts/time etc. ?
The SF admins would need to confirm if that is the problem ...
