Partition or Volume - Create New

How to Create a New Partition or Volume in Windows 7

   Information
This will show you how to create a new primary partition using Disk Management or Diskpart in Windows 7 from a empty unallocated partition or volume.
   Note
A primary partition is a type of partition created on a hard drive that can have a operating system installed on it. A primary partition functions as though it were a physically separate hard drive.

By default on a basic MBR disk, you can create a maximum of 4 Primary partitions, or 3 Primary partitions and 1 Extended partition with up to 128 logical volumes in the extended partition on a single hard disk.

*You must be logged on in an administrator account to be able to do this tutorial.
   Warning
If you disable the Disk Defragmenter service, then you will get the error below when you try to do anything in Disk Management. If you get this error, then make sure that the Disk Defragmenter service is set to only Manual.

Error.jpg

OPTION ONE

Create Primary Partition using Disk Management

1. You will first need to shrink a partition or volume from the free space on a disk to create unallocated space on that disk to use to create the new partition or volume with on the same disk.

   Note
If this is a disk that is unallocated, then skip this step and go straight to step 2.

2. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click on the Administrative Tools icon. then close the Control Panel window.

3. Click on Computer Management in Administrative Tools, then close the Administrative Tools window.

4. In the left pane under Storage, click on Disk Management. (See screenshot below) Create_Step1.jpg
5. In the middle pane, right click on the empty unallocated partition or volume and click on New Simple Volume. (See screenshot above)

6. Click on the Next button. (See screenshot below) Create_Step2.jpg
7. Type in how many MB (1 GB = 1024 MB) you want to use from the unallocated partition to create the new partition with, then click on the Next button. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: If you want to use all of the unallocated partition to create the new partition with, then type all of the maximum disk space shown for the unallocated partition. If you do not use all of the maximum disk space, then you can use the left over space from the unallocted partition to create another new partition with. Create_Step3.jpg
8. Select an available drive letter that you want to be assigned to the new partition in Computer, then click on the Next button. (See screenshot below) Create_Step4.jpg
9. Type in a volume label name that you want for the new partition, check the Perform a quick format box, and click on the Next button. (See screenshot below) Create_Step5.jpg
10. Click on the Finish button. (See screenshot below)

   Warning
If you get a pop-up with the message below, then click on No. You DO NOT want to convert the disk to dynamic. Doing so could render Windows 7 unbootable. A clean install of Windows 7 would be the only way to fix this afterwards if you were to click on Yes.

The operation selected will convert the disk to dynamic... are you sure you want to continue?
Create_Step6.jpg
11. The new primary partition or volume has now been created with the assigned unallocted partition space (step 7). (See screenshot below) Create_Step7.jpg
12. Close the Computer Management window. (See screenshot above)

OPTION TWO

Create Primary Partition using Diskpart in Elevated Command Prompt

1. You will first need to shrink a partition or volume to create a unallocated partition to use to create the new partition or volume with.

2. Open an elevated command prompt, or a command prompt at boot.

3. In the elevated command prompt, type diskpart and press Enter. (See screenshot below) CMD_Create_Step1.jpg
4. In the elevated command prompt, type list disk and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: This is to help you ID the disk number that has Free unallocated space that you want to create a new partition with. For example, Disk 1 with 80 GB of free space. CMD_Create_Step2.jpg
5. In the elevated command prompt, type select disk # and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: You would substitute # for the disk number listed that you want to create a new partition with the free unallocated space there. For example, I want to create a new partition with the 80 GB of free space, so I would type select disk 2 and press Enter. CMD_Create_Step3.jpg
6. In the elevated command prompt, type create partition primary and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: This will create a new blank RAW partition with selected disk (step 5) that contains the unallocated partition free space. CMD_Create_Step4.jpg
7. In the elevated command prompt, type list volume and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: Look for the volume number that has the same Size as from the Free space in step 4. For example, Volume 3. CMD_Create_Step5.jpg
8. To Format the Partition or Disk as a NTFS File System
NOTE: This would be good for using with a HDD as an example. A) In the elevated command prompt, type format fs=ntfs quick and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: Having quick added at the end of the command will do a quick format instead of a full format on the new blank RAW partition (step 6) to make it a new partition. CMD_Create_Step6.jpg
B) Go to step 10.
9. To Format the Partition or Disk as a FAT32 File System
NOTE: This would be good for using with a USB key drive as an example. The FAT32 file system has size limitations. You cannot create a FAT32 partition greater than 32 GB. In addition, you cannot store a file larger than 4 GB on a FAT32 partition. For more information, see Comparing NTFS and FAT file systems. A) In the elevated command prompt, type format fs=fat32 quick and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: Having quick added at the end of the command will do a quick format instead of a full format on the new blank RAW partition (step 6) to make it a new partition.
10. When it is finished formatting, type exit in the elevated command prompt and press Enter. (See screenshot below) CMD_Create_Step7.jpg
11. Close the elevated command prompt.

12. The new primary partition has now been created. You can now see the new partition in Computer with a drive letter.
That's it,
Shawn

Hello Schauhan,

You're not going to be able to do this with Disk Management. Instead you will need a 3rd party program like the free Partition Manager Home Edition to shrink and create the partition.

The confused Newbie

Hello again, attached is a snapshot of the current status;
so I right-clicked on the free space I had and performed the "simple partition" wizard, ending up with a new "logical" partition M: as in snaphot:
My questions are getting more!
1- Why is it a "logical" and not a primary partition?
2- How can I divide this to 2 partitions?
3- Why the "shrink" order on drive C: only allows me to shrink it to 200GB (ie. by ~ 230 GB), I felt 100 GB should be enough for drive C: and I could use the rest for my stuff?!
4- Why Disk 0 is 465 GB? is that the total storage space of my drive? where's the rest of the 500 GB?
5- If I need to recover windows using the recovery discs I made (right after purchasing the laptop and before performing any partitioning, will my paritions (currently only M: ) stay unaffected?

Awaiting your replies!

Hello Miro,

Q1) By default on a MBR disk, you can create a maximum of 3 Primary partitions and 1 extended partition with up to 128 logical volumes in the extended partition on a single hard disk.

Q2) If you have enough free space on it, then you can use this tutorial again to shrink the M: partition by how much you want for the new one and create the new partition from the unallocated space.

Q3) At step 7, you should have been able to change that to be 102400 MB for 100 GB.

Q4) Yes that is the total amount of storage space on your hard drive. HDD manufacturers use a decimal system when stating their drive sizes since it appears larger than it is. For example, I have a 750GB HDD, but it's actually only about 698 GB due to this.

Q5) Yes, it will not be touched. It will only format your C: partition to do the factory restore to.

The confused newbie

Thanx Brink for your reply and sorry for my further questions:

Q1: from the snapshot I see I have 2 primary partitions C: and D: (recovery), is "system" a seperate partition? I'm a little confused cuz I'm just switching from Win XP which was much simpler!

Q2: It worked, now I have 2 logical partitions (100 GB each) in addition to C: D:

Q3: For Drive C: now you see its 247 GB, when I try to shrink it now I get a "size of available shrink space" 20607 MB (only 20GB!), do you have an explanation for that? The system is new and I haven't yet installed any softwares or played around that much to need a defragmentation I suppose.

Q5: That's assuring.. what if I deciede to downgrade to windows XP? what will be the case?

Sorry for all the questions again, really I'm new to all this and your input is very valuable at this point.

No problem,

Q1) That would be your OEM system partition. It is a separate partition, but it just doesn't have a drive letter assigned to it since it is a system partition instead. That's all.

Q2) Great news. :)

Q3) Your C: drive will also have allocated space set aside for the page file (virtual memory), superfetch, restore points, etc.... Even though they may not use up the allocated space, the allocated space is not available for use by you. Thus, you cannot shrink it.

Q4/5) If you decide to downgrade, then just format the C: drive to wipe out Windows 7 and install XP on it.

Hey Brink
Q3) I'm still a little puzzled about this, my C: partition now is 227 GB and can no longer shrink it further, although I see other people with C: partitions of much smaller size reaching 80 GB... so now I have around 200 GB that my system uses and not available for my use, leaving me only with the 200 GB I divided upon the other 2 logical partitions? Do I understand this correct? What is extra in my system's case to need 227 GB untouched and unavailable for my use?
that really depresses me if so :-( so the only way to use it is store some of my stuff on the C: parition? I usually don't prefer that and always store my stuff away from C: which I leave only for the OS.
Is anyone else out there having this situation too?

Miro,

This also has to do with the way your drive layout is with already having a partition (ex: Recovery) extended off of the C: partition. You can use a 3rd party program like the one in my post above to shrink it further though.

Hello again Shawn,

I now have a brand new hard drive (actually I got it last week but I have been testing) and it worked for like 4 days and then... Same error all over again. Reinstalled windows, got it within one day. Then reinstalled again and it worked for a while but it gave the error again 15 minutes ago. I bet this doesn't belong in this topic anymore but now I think it has been my motherboard all along. Happily the motherboard had 2 years warrant and it has been bought somewhere at the beginning of last year. It might be the motherboard because it sometimes freezes in the first screen (press del for BIOS etc.) and the hard drives sometimes disappear.
Advices would be great at the moment.

Devil,

It could be a bad motherboard. If you have not already, check at your motherboard's website to see of there are any newer chipset drivers available for Windows 7. You might also reset to default or double check your BIOS settings to make that they are all correct for your setup as well. It wouldn't hurt to run MemTest86+ at boot to test your RAM just to rule them out as well.

I already ran the memtest86+ and it didn't give any errors. The bios has been reset to default once already. I haven't checked the website in a while. Last time I did there was no drivers for Win 7 but maybe now.

There was new drivers for the chipset and I'm downloading them right now. Only thing is that it takes a long time since it downloads only 20kB/s -_- I hope that fixes it. The computer has never been used with any other Windows than Win 7. And when I checked last time there was no drivers. So I have never had any drivers for my chipset and since that this might even work.

Hello Adi Adi,

Yes, with them formated you can use Disk Management to shrink the Windows 7 partition (ex: 320 GB HDD) by how much you the 2nd and 3rd partitions to be, then shrink the 2nd partition by how much you want the 3rd partition to be.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
