Solved Password protected sharing is OFF, still asked to auth.?

I've read through pages and pages of search results for this, but they all seem to be between Win7 and XP, or something not quite the same as my problem.

Here at home we are all using Windows 7 (a mix of Home Premium and Ultimate). I have an HTPC which has all our DVDs on. This PC has a few shares so we can access our movies across the network.

I have set up the shares using the Sharing Wizard thing, and set 'Everyone' to Read/Write. I can verify the permissions for the shares in Advanced Sharing > Permissions, and see that 'Everyone' has full control.



In the Network and Sharing Center, the settings for sharing are as follows:

• Network discovery = ON
• File and printer sharing = ON
• Public folder sharing = OFF (no need for it)
• Media streaming = ON (for WMP, Xbox)
• Use 128-bit encryption = ON
• Password protected sharing = OFF
• Allow Windows to manage Homegroup connections = ON

I should point out after the last bullet point that we are not using a Homegroup.

So with all that as it is, whenever I try to connect to the HTPC shares from another computer, I still get prompted for a username and password, with the "X Invalid user name and password" message beneath the text boxes. I can, however, connect without a problem from my laptop, which has the same username and password as the admin account on the HTPC.

The strange thing now - if I type "anonymous" into the username box and try to connect, I get in. Everything then works as it should. So either all the computers in our house have decided not to try the "anonymous" account, or something is up on the HTPC.

Any ideas?

You might want to check that the time/date settings are correct on the HTPC. If they aren't correct on one of your machines it will give you a password prompt as you described.

Also under power options, make sure that it's not set to require a password when coming out of sleep state.

Go to Control Panel, then Power Options "look upper left side". Click "Require a password on wakeup".

Select the radio button "Don't Require a Password" and then Save Changes. Your done.

I just had a thought, though - I have Sharepoint Foundation running on the HTPC for a little intranet we have going. It is set up on port 8080 and does not allow anonymous access (to what I assume is the intranet site). Could this be the problem?

this is a wild guess... see if enabling the "guest" account helps.

Guest account is enabled already. The "Guests" group contains "Guest" and "NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON (S-1-5-7)".

I should have spotted it sooner...

Identical usernames on the HTPC and various computers around the house, but passwords were different. Windows was using it's own system (which was working for me, as I have the same password), but for everyone else there were different passwords. It was trying to log on using those passwords, but failing.

Changed the usernames - all good now

Hello I am a very simple soul and this is driving me to distraction. I have a lone PC running Windows 7 (home premium). It sits on a desk all on its own, it is hardwired to the router & its printer; it has no wireless connections, it is not networked (there is no network it is a single PC) so why oh why is my Office 2007 programme repeatedly asking for the network password, over & over again.
I have been into the network manager and turned off the password requirement as shown on the idiot guide and still it requests the Network Password!
Where has this come from? It has worked happily for the past year since purchase now out of the blue it has rendered itself as regards Office as junk
Please there must be someone who understands where this is coming from? This PC is here to order car spares and do my tax return on, not to fill my day!
