Kari is correct. In addition if you are the only user of your computer and there is nothing ultra sensitive to lose (if pc get stolen, etc) you are better off without the password. Nothing to forget or screw up, then losing access to your computer.

The strange thing is a friend of mine who only just installed win7 home edition is having that very problem insofar that every time he starts his pc the system demands a password even though he doesn't really want one.. How do you overcome that please?

Yes, another very good option.

There are a few situations, such as trying to use Remote Desktop, that require a password be set. I agree that the auto-login route is generally the best way to go. Just don't become complacent and forget what the password actually is in case you ever have to type it in.
