I am replacing a broken laptop display for someone and this option came up: do I want a Matte or Glossy screen?

To be honest I never noticed the difference before!:o

But I now know that my desktop monitor is a Matte screen, and all the laptops here are Glossy. There are obvious and subtle differences.

And apparently quite the debate on the interwebs!

So which do you guys prefer? Matte or Glossy? Why?

The matte display is more versitile (suitable for many different circumstances). Definately need an antiglare (matte) screen for a laptop since it is generally used in so many various locations. Glare on a laptop screen can be a significant problem.

I'm with Chris. My housemate has a beautiful glossy screen for her main (home) monitor, but I don't think it would be good in a mobile environment since, as Chris said, you can't control what's going to be reflected in it. :)

Matter of personal taste I guess. I love glossy. Was also concerned about the glare and thought I would have to keep the shades down all the time (window behind me). After some time I got used to having the window open and the glare didnt matter to me. I guess because my monitor is so bright and vivid (S27a950d) it just 'overwhelms' any of the reflections. But thats just me which I'm sure others will differ with.

But for those with controllable environments where reflections can be controlled, glossy screens can be quite striking and impressive. Put a matte right next to it and you may feel underwhelmed. TBH, I dont think I can return to a matte screen again.

I think glossy displays look better in very low-light settings, such as watching a movie on a laptop in a dark room. However, for normal usage, I find that glossy screens are nearly unbearable in a bright room, with it be artificial light or sunlight.
