PC Lock Up When Resuming From Sleep . . .

Hello,

I'm dual booting Win 7 and Win 10, but have a problem with Win 7 where more often than not, it locks when resuming from Sleep and I have to reboot. Win 10 doesn't suffer from this.

I prefer Win 7 over 10 to be honest so am trying to stick with it for now. However, I wanted to be able to use Bit Locker on Win 7, so upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate. I can't remember having this issue with Win 7 Home.

At present, I have clean installed Ultimate with nothing on it apart from MS Security Essentials and a Renesas USB 3.0 driver for my expansion USB 3 board. The PC still locks coming out of sleep. I have uninstalled both the USB driver and MS Security Essentials - and it still locks - so Win 7 is completely bare bones.

I'm beginning to think it maybe a Windows Update that's the issue?

This maybe a needle in a haystack to try and find from what I've read concerning power issues, but is there a program or such I can run that will point me in the right direction as to what I causing the lock up.

I had disabled Hibernation as well, but the fault persists with Sleep. I've not tested it for long enough to see if it hangs with Hibernation as well.

Any ideas what I could try please?

With many thanks

Dumfy

I had same problem (on a Intel MB) that was fixed with a BIOS update but it doesn't seems to be your case as you said that Win 7 HP worked fine.

Open Device manager to see if all drivers are installed and there is no yellow alerts.

Indeed - Windows 7 HP worked fine, but I am on an AMD chip and mobo, but that shouldn't make a difference I guess.

I checked Device Manager and there was a yellow alert, but tat was because I hadn't installed the required USB 3 driver . . .

If you want to wake up by mouse or keyboard that is connected on a USB port you must have all USB drivers installed as USB hardware is on the chipset and use same driver. Give it a try.

All USB drivers installed. USB 3 drivers installed from the CD that came with the expansion board. I now have no alerts in Device Manager. System still locks up with Win 7 Ultimate, but not Win 10.

It doesn't lock up every time though - just once in every three perhaps.

Have just installed Piriform Speccy to tell me my full system details and according to the report, my BIOS is already F8n. I remember updating it a while ago now.

Should I be OK with this version as I've been running on it since I can't remember when . .

AMD has a driver update software. AMD Driver Autodetect

Download Drivers

As you said that Win 10 works well it can be that a chipset driver update will fix the problem.

Thanks for the links & your suggestion made sense. Installed & run AMD Driver Autodetect & installed/updated Catalyst and drivers. Had hopes this was the answer as for the first time, Windows Update managed to update and install an AMD driver where it always failed before.

Sadly, the PC still locks up when waking from sleep. Not sure if this helps, but the wireless keyboard and mouse are non responsive and there is a red cross covering the network icon in the system tray. Have also tried connecting the wireless mouse/keyboard to different USBs and also disconnecting them and just using power button to sleep and wake PC - still locks up. .

Have tried the above, but PC still locks up I'm sorry to say. It's a little frustrating, but thanks for your patience Megahertz07.

I can't remember having this issue with Win 7 Home - only with Ultimate. There could be something in Ultimate that my system doesn't like . . . ?

Don't think it's related to the Win 7 version. All uses same basic core.

Try a System File check
Open a CMD window and type
sfc /scannow

Tried the scan and it completed without any errors.

Am still getting lock ups after sleep, but have just noticed that the PC doesn't appear to lock up if I use Hibernate instead. Have gone through several hibernate cycles without locking up. By now, I would have had 2 or 3 when using Sleep.

Don't know if that can shed any light on things . . .

My last bullet.
Launch a CMD window and Type:
chkdsk c: /f

It will ask if you want to schedule a disk check on next boot = Yes

Pay attention on the results

Many thanks for you patience. I ran Checkdisk as above and studied the results. Wasn't sure what to look for. A couple of things were picked up but nothing could recognise. I assume Checkdisk repairs anything it finds?

I tested Win 7 again and it still locks up unfortunately - but not every time. I maybe stuck with this . . . as far as Win 7 is concerned . . .

Max the performance of everything in the power settings, I have encounter this issue before and I believe it to be due the suspending of certain devices based on their power, especially the processor minimum state. MAX it all baby. This way the OS cannot get confused trying to wake everything up back to where it was, it's just ON!

And yes, the correct chipset drivers or latest chipset updates are always helpful, or....maybe reinstall the older chipsets! HHA< never know!
