Hi,

Recently I have this problem, that my PC shuts down when playing graphic intense games like The Witcher 3, Resident Evil 7, NBA 2k 16. While playing different games like Crusader Kings 2 or World of Tanks everything runs OK.

What I have done so far:

1) Updated my GPU drivers, with clean install
2) Cleaned my PC from dust
3) Changed thermal paste of CPU
4) Changed thermal paste for GPU also
5) Ran a stress CPU test

I can not find the reason why, but I think it might be the GPU overheating, as I have read that Radeon cards tend to do so. There is no BSOD, or any system errors, PC just shuts off and thats all!
So what can I do?

This is really wierd. I just ran MSI Afterburner to see ingame Temps, GPU was 65C and CPU 61C. but PC still made a shut down, just turned off, could it be the PSU fault?

My R9 280 gets cranky after about 55 to 58 degrees C, and shuts down somewhere in the 60's. It seems to be normal for the R9 200 series cards that I've worked with.

Something that the newer Radeon cards are notorious for is that the fan setting in Catalyst Control Centre, or in Crimson Control Centre will not run the fan fast enough when set to auto. My card (and the one before it) will happily get hot enough to catch fire, and the fan will be merrily turning at 20% and never budging in speed. I was getting consistent shutdowns like you are.

I solved the problem by setting the fan to manual, and I have it run at about 65%. I've never had a temp above 45C since I did it, and I have had absolutely no shutdowns from the GPU.

It's something you might want to try. It definitely costs nothing but a few seconds of your time.

Well I adjusted the fans to 70%, Resident Evil 7 ran without shuting down, bu NBA 2k 16 still shut down PC after 15min :(
Could it be new Crimson drivers that do this because before I did not have such problems?

My best guess would be a power supply issue - I'd always recommend reinstalling the operating system to rule out software issues firs though. Does the screen go blue or does it just shut down?

Could it be new Crimson drivers that do this because before I did not have such problems?
Check the Crimson control panel between games, and make sure that the fan has not been automatically set back to "Auto". One of the Crimson driver packs did that a while ago, before AMD/ATI fixed it.

Also, check your power supply connections and make sure that they are all plugged in properly and are secure. Since this only happens while gaming (right?), I doubt that it is your power supply, but to rule it out, can you borrow another supply to at least do a test?

Too bad I have no option to get a different PSU, but I will check the PSU connectors and see that the fans dont go auto!
