Until yesterday, I had an external HDD (for backups) connected to my PC via USB, and the system booted and ran fine. Yesterday, an unrelated problem required that I reset my BIOS to factory defaults. Now the system locks up during POST if the external HDD is connected; it doesn't even get to the point where I can press DEL to enter BIOS set-up.

Without the external HDD connected, the machine boots and runs fine. Once Windows starts, I can plug in the HDD and it works fine too.

If I disconnect the HDD, I can boot and press DEL to get into BIOS set-up, but if then I plug in the HDD at that point, the system instantly locks up.

This behavior suggests to me that there's a BIOS setting I need to change to get it working the way it did before the reset, something for which the factory default isn't the right choice, but I've reviewed all the settings and haven't found one that makes any difference (I admit that some of the settings exceed my technical expertise). Is it indeed likely to be a BIOS setting? If so, which one? If not, what else could it be?

System details:
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 Rev. 1.0
CPU: Intel i5 2.67 GHz
OS: 64-bit Windows 7 SP 1
RAM: 8 GB
Video: Nvidia GTX 1060 6 GB VRAM

Update: Found the solution. I must disable "USB Legacy Storage" in the BIOS. (I had this enabled because I loaded SATA drivers from a jump drive during system repair.)
