Crap Cleaner - Clean temp files

Back up registry and data. Image drive.

Run: SFC /scannow (from a command prompt) - and let it check/repair/verify your system files

Which pretty much defeats whatever one or the other has done, as no two defrag utilities function the same. Pick one or the other, but not both.

+1 Excellent list!

I would add - Check your BIOS settings occasionally. Errors can happen, and things can change out of the blue. And of course, some malware messes with it...

lol windows 7 just works... why waste time messing with it. i do use mse for protection and let windows update notify me when updates are available, but the the days of trying to optimize have passed, unless your computer isn't up to spec i guess?

Optimizing isn't really necessary, sure, but you still need to do a little housekeeping now and then.

I personally DO NOT BELIEVE that principle. For people with 4 gigs of RAM like yourself, common degradations in performance isn't that noticeable, but use a PC with 1 GB RAM, like mine or below and you do feel the machine gets slower by the time.

Partially mentioned, above, be careful with Registry cleaners and optimizers. Use Erunt to backup your whole registry and make a system restore point BEFORE using the registry cleaner.

I use registry cleaners but I'm very careful whilst using them.

And hey, it would be very wise to dust the inside of the CPU every few months. Dust is a killer!!!

I might add that using Ccleaner every few weeks helps, also remove any unnecessary start-up programs.
i only use a disk de-frag program after major software changes.

There's a free program that i sometimes use called Glary Utility's and it has stuff like Defrag, Registry Cleaner, Disk Cleaner, Start-up-Manager, ect.

My advice is to stay away from Reg cleaners. I have helped too many, here, already that had problems due to reg cleaners. Many will agree, I am sure.

I could type forever on this subject but I won't. If you read and comply with riche46 post # 2 and 12. Pusspa7 post #7 you will have a very good start. IMHO Windows 7 just works great all by itself. BEWARE operating system so called Tuneup Programs can do more harm than good.
If your not sure of something do research and start here.

To clarify, I was speaking of optimization as in tweaking, and screwing around with the registry, which are unnecessary with Win 7.

It doesn't matter how much RAM you have. Regular maintenance of your PC is vital to maintaining the performance level. I regularly do most of the things that Lemur posted, and I also do your excellent suggestion of blowing out the dust.

I'm sorry that you disagree with me, but you'll never see a reg cleaner or tuneup utility on my machine. I've read too many horror stories, and I personally trashed an install of Vista by using them. No more.
