i found this highly worrying to be quite frank, ive been running Vista Ultimate 32x SP2 for a long time no problems atall including with performance.

over the weekend i VM'ed a win 7 machine through Vista using the same Laptop receorces and it ran ok.

I then thought i might aswell move onto win 7 as vista is no longer the main focus point of compatability :(

So i formatted my drive fully and installed win 7 ultimate 64x within 30mins.

This is whats getting me though its slower than Vista! startup and log in just takes an age and Idle is at 900Mb with no startup Apps apart from the AV and windows stuff thats essential to start up.

Any ideas as to why its so slow to start up and using so much RAM at IDLE?

Tews gave you a good suggestion, follow it. If the problem continues do a check disk for errors c drive, properties. If that fails, type troubleshooting in search, by start menu.

Vista has more support than Win 7, infact you end up using Vista drivers for Win 7 in many cases.

Win 7 support will come in time but Vista support aint going anywhere soon, there is SP3 to come.

As well it should... You cant compare an OS with 2sp's to one that has only been on the shelves for a month.. not really fair if you are honest about it...

I don't know if you mean his comment or mines.

I was not comparing just making a statement that the FACT Vista has more support so his comment I quoted is a moot point.

Hi and welcome

How much ram do you have? win 7 uses memory different than vista did. It takes about half of available memory in cache to speed up requests. Thats a good thing and the way it is supposed toi work. what is the WEI rating?

Something is not right. 900 MB with nothing running is not normal. Compare to my 950 MB and see all the stuff that is running (picture). And also the slow boot is not normal. It does not even look like a virus that is chipping away in the background because your CPU usage is 0%. I can only suspect that something went wrong with the installation.

Torrentg, is one of our best, I was even able to learn from him in the past. I really don't think that he is kidding about the problems associated with AVG. I would take his advice in conjuction with the poster that mentiond MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) and see how it goes

No further suggestions as your system is now well. Do not look at used RAM as any indicator of performance. It's an incorrect way to do things.

Win 7 makes use of your RAM. You didn't buy it and have it in your machine to sit there and do nothing.
