Phone call PC SCAM

Just tied another one up for 20 minutes with my Ubuntu 11 scam :roflmao:

That was actually the third one of these calls I've had since my last post in this thread, but mostly they hang up within the first few minutes.

Barking and meowing on the phone when such people call also work very well...or blowing a sports whistle...:p

The next person to record the scam conversation and subsequent "put-down" of the scammer, and post it here for us to here, wins a free virtual donut.

I feel left out, I have never received one of these calls.
Maybe I need to put my land line on the "do call" list.

Just got one of those calls .... again :p

Managed to keep him on the phone for 38min. I really laid it on thick and pretended to cry because my PC was so infected and I really needed it fixed. :devil2:
He was so helpful telling me not to worry and that he could fix it for me, but you could tell he was getting a bit peed off when he kept telling me to click Start, and I kept on telling him "but I don't have Start" 10 min later after we had determined that I had windows 7 so he told me to click on the "round thing" at the bottom :D
Then another 10 min later after we struggled to navigate to the "windows" "inf" folder and he asked if I had any .pnf files. Of course there were loads (as there should be) He then said that my machine was badly infected.
Next thing was we had to open the Internet so he could remote my system, strung him on for another 10min telling him "but I don't have a blue e" We then figured out that I was using "google chrome" :D
By this time he was getting really frustrated and I was struggling to hold in my giggles.
So eventually I asked him what his profession was and he replied he was a senior technician, he then asked what job do I do, to which I replied in a fit of laughter "I'm an IT Manager" ........ click .... silence.
He didn't even give me chance to say thank you for starting my day off with such a laugh :roflmao:

I personally have never had one of these...but I would rather like one - although I don't have 20-30 minutes to string them on for, I am sure I could still have a little fun! Anyway, I was over at a relative's house a few days ago, fixing a broken PC (corrupt iPlayer cache) and was rather unlucky in that this relative received one of these calls as I was fixing an actual broken iPlayer. He had never actually had one of these calls before, and it took some convincing that it was a scam - and he was never totally convinced.

True story from a Linux user at another forum who recently received a number of the fake calls from Microsoft. She had some fun with the last call:

"Hello Mrs. D., I'm calling on behalf of Microsoft"
"Uh-huh", I said.
"I'd like to discuss your Windows with you..."
"I like blinds on mine"
"Excuse me?"
"Blinds. I like blinds on mine. That way I can let just the right amount of light into the room and it doesn't wash out the picture on my TV."
"No madam, I mean your the operating system"
"I'm not a doctor"
"Excuse me?"
"I'm not a doctor so I can't operate"
"No madam, the Windows operating system"
"I've also got curtains over my blinds. It frames the windows so nicely!"
"Mrs. D., I wish to talk to you about your computer"
"I use Linux...will that be a problem?"
Click

Some people just have no sense of humor.

Windows Scam

Those kind people just called me to alert me to the viruses on my PC. They were very patient for 1.5 hours until it came to payment and for some reason my card number didn't work.

I couldn't believe the lies. They told me to look at the Event Log and guided me. According to them all of the warnings and errors were due to viruses. They passed me from person to person, in different departments, to make it look genuine.

They took control of my PC, downloaded some software and scanned for viruses and after evil problems. They rebooted my PC and upon restarting it continued to control it.

I will be reformatting the hard drive and re-installing the O/S. Hopefully I stopped them from scamming other people and yes, I realised it was fake as soon as they spoke!

I'm from Australia also and get these calls from "Microsoft" often. The last call I received was from a woman who told me she was offering free support to Microsoft customers who are having slow computers. I told her that I wasn't interested because I've maintained my computer well and it's working fine. She then said "bye" in a rude voice and rung up. That's it. Seems as though she's sick of getting turned down. More people these days are aware thanks to the education around cyber-security.

And yet another one I kept him going for 23 minutes before he gave up and told me to go to PC world.

I just checked the recorder and it has not recoreded (I'll do some testing and make sure I get the next one).

I want a call, I demand a call, I want a play.

The best I've managed to date is a conservatory salesman who I managed about 6 or 7 minutes before telling him I lived on the 7th floor of a tower block.

The other regulars seem to be mobile phone third parties wanting me to 'switch' to their contract. When they learn that I'm on PAYG and typically only topup by about £20 - £30 a year they soon hang up :)
