Phone call PC SCAM

I answered the phone yesterday afternoon to be told by a person from a particular part of the world, he was phoning from Microsoft Windows and was going to help speed my PC up.
To exclude most of what I said, (expletives deleted) I told him that MS don't do that and that he was an idiot for thinking I would believe him.

Apart from them I do get pestered about PIP compensation.

If you have a good firewall and up to date antivirus and try to go to the same websites, then you won't be hacked.

Windude pal, an antivirus and firewall won't stop these guys ... they normally direct you to remote control software download site which they then ask you to install, this circumnavigates your AV and firewall .... it ends up that the user becomes the weak link and they can remotely help themselves to whatever they please ;)

Scam phone call

Just got the same scam phone call today. Caller said he was from Microsoft and they had picked up a large number of viruses being downloaded to my computer. Since I hadn't responded to any of Microsoft's attempts to contact me (he couldn't explain how they had tried to contact me) they were now calling. With a very thick east India accent (nice touch on scamers part) he explained that he had to take control of my computer to fix the problem...I didn't think so...and he hung up when I told him I needed to call Microsoft for verification. I had not heard about this scam and while I wish there was an easy way to find out about these things, it would probably take days, months, years to read about all of them.

Don't have caller ID. I seldom use the land line anymore. The guy really did have a thick India accent. I could barely understand him which irritated him to no end. His tone of voice was really quite rude...very strange when you are trying to get people to trust you. I was surprised at the lack of sophistication but if these guys ever do get very sophisticated I think we are all in trouble.

They are targeting South Africa too - saying if I open computer management then event viewer, then windows logs and look at say application - that all those error messages will destroy my PC & I will loose everything unless I install their software.
So I see that their website is registered through Privacy Protection who do have a section where you can report abuse. If you get a minute or two - please complain about them.
PS I had great fun with my indian lady (called Sharon Williams from California phone 02013386170). I tried to engage with her & chat to her on a personal level ha,ha & managed to keep her on the line for sometime. i got her really wound up by asking how to right click & anything i could think - eventually i ran out of time - so when we got to the crunch - where you download their software & i asked to be excused because my baby was crying & never returned to the phone. felt bad ha,ha.

These calls are still rolling in all these months later.

Just had a guy who kept talking about windows so I told him I'd closed the curtains so I couldn't tell him what was going on out the windows.

I also told him, "I also have a pear....is that right...pear?...that doesn't sound right..."

I never had one of these calls (no landline at my house). Next time someone gets a call from "support" you should pick up the phone and tell the person that you don't live there. You are only there to rob the place.

FWIW: I just got a call from "unknown number" telling me that they were support and that my computer had been infected. I played along for over 20 minutes not doing exactly what they wanted me to. They asked me to look at even viewer and there they kinda stalled when I was unable (:) to find the errors. They finally wanted me to put in a www support dot me address in the cmd line. I kept telling them that I don't know what me is and they really were frustrated in their broken english as I kept saying that I did not understand why me was a support person as I am a dummy. <G>

I finally hung up on them but at least I kept them screwing around for a while and they could not trap some innocent person with their garbage..

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
I've had 3 of these phone calls this week. The number on my caller ID always shows up 000-000-0000. The first two calls started out...Hi I'm such and such (heavy Indian accent) and I'm calling from PC Systems and your computer is infected with dangerous viruses. Both times I told him my computer was not infected and not to call back. Today however, when he called, somehow he knew my name, which immediately set me off. I told him that I knew for a fact that my computer wasn't infected and if he contacted me again, I was going to call the FBI, which he replied....OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to laugh because it was just to funny. He then said..."but you don't understand" and I replied....no you don't understand...I will call the FBI...and again I got....OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Of course I had a few choice words for him like...ignorant a--hole and f------terrorist. I think he got the point though. lol

I have a new one to add to the list. I just received a phone call from an heavily accented Indian who said he worked for 'Total Defense' an anti vurus company. He said I had used their software an I owed them $159.99. I told him I had never used their software. He said I had and that he had my paperwork in front of him and that was how he knew how to call me. I'm sorry, but I've had a bad day and didn't feel like fooling around with him. I told him, let me explain the facts of life to you, 1. I have never had and would never have your software. 2. I would suggest you throw away whatever paperwork you have that has my phone number on it, because you're wasting your time calling me. You're never getting any money from me 3. You are nothing but a scammer trying to steal money from people who don't know any better. I am not one of those. I hung up the phone. On a better day, I usually play around with them for as long as I can, but again, this is a bad day for me and I did not have that inclination.
