Photoshop Causes Blue Screen Crash

OK I'm headed to bed and I'm just about in tears after 3 hours of work.

Ran everything, restarted and so forth.

-I failed to follow Anak's instructions to save to "c:\progra~2\adobe" the first time. So the reinstall resulted in the same blue screen crash.

-I manually uninstalled the exact same way I had before and reinstalled into "c:\progra~2\adobe" same blue screen crash all over again.

-I suspect that all traces of Photoshop were not erased as the folders "Adobe Bridge" "Common" "Help" and "Stock Photos" still existed. I deleted them and reinstalled. Same blue screen crash.

I am attaching the mini dump file.

-I also remembered "Adobe Image Ready" a program similar to Photoshop was installed at the same time in December 2009. It's still working fine.

Clearly we need a new game plan.

-I propose trying to find the source of the blue screen crash.

-Or attempting to download a 30 free trial of Photoshop CS2 from Adobe's website. At least it will get me through the next 30 days. (if it works)

-If that doesn't work downloading a 30 free trial of Photoshop CS6.

I'm open to any other suggestions.

Alright, one thing that has not yet been tried: Run a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html with both boxes checked for HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors checked if you have an SSD. Report back with the logs; you can find them with http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/96938-check-disk-chkdsk-read-event-viewer-log.html. You may need to search for wininit instead of chkdsk to find the logs.

With both boxes checked, it may take a couple hours to run, so you may choose to do so when you go to bed. :)

Thanks for not giving up on me.

It says it cannot run while C drive is in use. I tried it with all programs closed. How can I run a disk check on the C drive?

You will need to schedule it to run the next time Windows starts. Alternatively:

Use http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html to select Repair Your Computer and get to the http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html. Then select the command prompt. Do the following:
chkdsk /r c:
chkdsk /r d:
chkdsk /r e:
chkdsk /r f:
.etc until you get the message that the volume could not be opened for direct access. For any drives that do not give the message:
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems
run chkdsk again as above. In other words, if it says:
Windows has made corrections to the file system
after running the disk check, run the disk check again.

I realize you may only have one disk show up in Windows explorer, but you may have more than one disk through recovery options. This is because the system creates a hidden boot partition (which will be C: in recovery), you may have a recovery partition for your PC that is hidden (which will be D: in recovery), and you will have your primary Windows partition (which may be E: in recovery). A custom PC will likely have at least C: and D: to scan.

How did CHKDSK go?

Your latest .dmp from post #42 still points to CLASSPNP.SYS, and adobelmsvc.exe as being the cause.

Your Belarc report states that you have Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 installed, how is that running, does it crash when opened, can you use that instead?

I will wait until your next reply before I suggest anything more.

D drive scan complete. While there was no way to save or copy and paste the report it said there were 0 problems found.

Should I scan my external drives as well? This'll take at least 3 hours.

Adobe Premier CS3 is like photo shop for video editing. It's still working fine. So is Adobe Acrobat and Primo, and Image Ready. Just photoshop is causing the problem.

OK as of Sunday night, running the disk check on the external drive has already taken 5 hours and it's nowhere near done. It's a full 990G so this will be an over night project.

Anak: what do the dump files tell us?

Unless anyone has a better suggestion tomorrow I'm going to TRY and download the 30 day trial version of CS6. Unless there are any other scans you want me to run?

.dmp files still indicate CLASSPNP.SYS as the cause and adobelmsvc.exe as the process running when the crash occurred. Do you have any new .dmp files from today?
Anak: Since we know these two issues may be the cause, what can we do about them?
I've discussed this with writhziden, and we both feel there is something fundamentally wrong with the installer on your machine, and instead of trying to fix it piecemeal you would see better results in doing a Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using HP Recovery - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
This would entail having backups of all your important programs, and data files which I understand the HP recovery Manager will allow you to do.

OK as of Sunday night, running the disk check on the external drive has already taken 5 hours and it's nowhere near done. It's a full 990G so this will be an over night project.
Don't stop that DSKCHK or you can cause irreparable damage to that external drive, and no don't run any more scans on the External Drives, the problem resides on your main HDD.

I see writhziden posted about the causes, here's the whole report. I put the offending causes in BOLD/RED:

The ServiceTransferRequest points to a hotfix, but if you use it, and it doesn't fix it I believe you would definitely be looking at the Recovery option.

Anak, one key question first. I’ve been manually uninstalling Photoshop by deleting the program files. Per your instructions I saved them under “c:\progra~2” where is this folder so I can get to those files and delete them if need be?

Thanks for the advice. A good strategy session is in order.

System Recovery:

Hotfix to solve error 0x50:

Downloading a 30 day trial version of photoshop:

A “system recovery” seems drastic. Whenever I’ve done these they’ve had terrible consequences. Like all programs being erased and needing to be installed. I could back up my files on an external drive but this seems like it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

I do thank you for your advice and I understand you’re saying, “This may be your only option.”

Hotfix seems worth a try. I’ll attempt it tonight around 8:00pm EST but I’m sure I’ll have questions.

Is there any downside in downloading a 30 day trial version of photoshop? I figure the worst I could get would be a blue screen crash which is what I already have?

We understand your concerns about a clean install. Anak and I actually anticipated you might feel that way; this was not because of you, but because many users feel the same way. However, a clean install is often the best way to fix computer problems. I usually do one every six months or so for a couple reasons:
 1. It keeps my system clean and running smoothly.
 2. It makes me realize all the crap I have on my system that I never actually use or need.

Obviously, if the Hotfix works or you can get a 30 day trial to work, that would put off the need to do a clean install (at least for 30 days). Along these lines, both are good things to try, and a 30 day trial should not cause any further issues than what you are already experiencing. It still may be a good idea to back up any important data prior to doing any further steps. I do not say this because I expect something bad to happen but because it is always a good idea to have backups of one's system in the event of an unexpected catastrophe.

C:\progra~2 is machine shorthand for C:\Program Files (x86).
If you followed my instructions, page 1, post #33:
When it gets to where it will be installed on your HDD, click on Browse it should highlight where it wants to install, But you want to copy/paste C:\progra~2\adobe where that highlight is.
You would of told the CS2 installer to create, and place the files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe, so open Explorer, and look for them there.

If they seem "drastic" to you, that means you did not fully understand what a system recovery is designed to do, and were not fully prepared for one.

If you were not fully prepared, you would be better served if you made an image or clone of your system, that is once you get back to its pristine condition.

Is there any downside in downloading a 30 day trial version of photoshop? I figure the worst I could get would be a blue screen crash which is what I already have?
Other than what writhziden has pointed out, I can only add the nag screen if you don't remove it or purchased it.

This maybe too little, too late, but,
I have noticed you run Symantec Security Technologies Version
109.0.0.107
This could be causing your install problems, try disabling it when doing your next install.

Thanks for sticking with me.

Sounds like a gameplan.

1. Run hotfix

2. Download 30 day trial.

3. System Recovery.

My distaste for a System Recovery (though I understand sometimes there may be no other choice) is, correct my misperceptions:

1. All programs are deleted and must be reinstalled?

2. Backing up the files. Not really a problem since almost all of my files are on an external drive.

3. Causes internet reconnections problems.

4. Changes personal settings. (not a big deal)

5. Our blue screen problem may still remain.

1. Run hotfix
Okay.

2. Download 30 day trial.
Why have you changed your mind about trying to install CS2?

3. System Recovery.
You may not need this if the hotfix works.

My distaste for a System Recovery (though I understand sometimes there may be no other choice) is, correct my misperceptions:

1. All programs are deleted and must be reinstalled?
The process starts with a quick format, when done your machine will be as when you first started to use it.
The only programs you will need to reinstall will be the thrid-party ones you installed.

2. Backing up the files. Not really a problem since almost all of my files are on an external drive.
Okay they can be added later.

3. Causes internet reconnections problems.
We can deal with that.

4. Changes personal settings. (not a big deal)
Okay.

5. Our blue screen problem may still remain.
It shouldn't, but don't forget if, and when you do the system recovery you need to remove anything that you added such as external drives, a second display.

Anak: I almost forgot about Symantec Security. I’ll try to disable it. May need your help. Can you be available at 8:00pm tonight?

A problem going back to last year is that under the Start Menu under All Programs most programs are empty. We could never fix this. Hence in order to open most programs I need to click on a file and select a program to open it with.

Dollanganger “All programs are deleted and must be reinstalled?

Anak: “The only programs you will need to reinstall will be the third-party ones you installed.”

This is the problem. Installing over 100 programs (most of which I don’t even have the disks for.) I guess we’ll cross this bridge if we come to it.

It sounds like your Windows installer has not been working right for a long time... This is starting to look like you will need to do the recovery, but we will have to wait and see how the other steps go first.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I often realize there is a lot that I do not actually need on my system. Are you sure you need all 100+ programs? If you do, you can provide a list of them and we can try to help you track down installation media through the software developers and get the keys written down that you might need.

Do not post any of your keys on this forum, though. Much like your Photoshop key, those are private information that should not be shared so as not to violate the license agreement. Plus, others could steal the key, use it, and you would no longer be able to install the software. Think of license keys/codes as the keys to your house; you would not want to give those to a stranger.

Enabling or disabling Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall should be similar to the process you need to use. I am not familiar with Symantec Security, myself, so I may need some help finding the software manual. Is the product actually called Symantec Security? Is it an enterprise program or a home user program?

Sorry to be a little in the dark, but Anak is the only one with access to your system information and I am not aware of what programs are actually installed other than what drivers were loaded in the .dmp file...
