The slim model comes with 120GB of storage...which means you can alocate alot to linux. As far as I know the slims will run linux too as the slims are running the same FW as the Foremans (Big PS3s).
My issue with linux on the PS3 is that it is SLOW!!!!! I installed Yellow Dog Linux a bit back (which has a distribution designed for the PS3) and I couldn't take it. Things might be different today but who knows
the new slim model comes without the "other OS" option taken out. atleast that's what i've been reading. thats why I got the 40gb model, plus saved me about $100.
there is a few editions of Ubuntu designed to install on the PS3
to me it just adds more usability to me, i was tempted to get a 360, but the PS3 has the edge with upgradable HDD, blu-ray, linux, wi-fi
Yea, what's funny is that my PS3 Slim came with Firmware 2.75 and it had the new "PS3: PlayStation 3" logo on startup and had Other OS Option. Once I downloaded and installed Firmware 3.00 the new startup was still "PS3" but no more Other OS.
Thats also a thing I had to decide when purchasing Xbox 360, the Xbox 360 is most likely already maxed out technically, and the bottem line it is MORE expensive than a PS3 with outdated hardware. Gotta add cost for HDD (if you dont have Pro/Elite, but even they matter to since 60GB is $100...), WiFi (doesn't accept WPA2 encryption) $100, Battery packs ($30), HD-DVD .....nothing for it anymore besides games.
Now if you look at PS3, you have 120GB that us upgradable (I'm thinking of swapping my 160GB laptop drive into PS3 and use 120GB in my laptop instead), built in WiFi B/G that accepts WPA2 encryption and DNS settings with Proxy as added bonus, Blu-Ray more space to fit better games onto, Bluetooth controller that charges in 10-15 minutes with a simple USB cord already included. Added bonus to play old PS1/PS2 games on older model PS3 systems with Linux too. Xbox 360 only has limited backward capability for certain "popular" Xbox games. PSN is absolutely free while LIVE is $60 a year that doesn't even include a virtual reality minigame segment (PS Home) but instead has lame colorful avatars that look straight off the Wii. PS3 also includes full Web Browser with Flash/WMA/Java Environment
