Solved Please critique my resignation letter!

I have decided to concentrate on my school lately, and my job hinders my ability to do just that! So I've decided to resign from work but I've never really written a resignation letter before.

Can you guys help me out and tell me what you think? Thanks a bunch!

Dear Sir/Ma’am,
Please accept this note as an advance notice of my resignation. Being my first job, I have earned a lot of experiences and have enjoyed a great employment opportunity with Dillard's.


While I have been very satisfied with Dillard's, I have decided to prioritize my goals in my education and career as a defender of the state. This was not an easy decision and it took a lot of consideration, but I believe this is necessary for my advancement in life.

I will gladly finish the remaining shifts that were assigned to me should I be able to.

Thank you very much for having me as part of your team.

It is with great regret that I wish to resign my position with Dillard's at a time that is suitable for both of us.

Whilst I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the company and learned an awful lot I have decided the time is right to continue my further education.

This tells the company why you're leaving, doesn't badmouth them and leaves the way open for future employment with them.

Good luck in your studies, I feel you've made the right decision. As the economy shrinks, qualifications will be all important when job-hunting.

Thanks for all the input guys. I revised my letter according to what smarteyeball wrote (I didn't get to read the other replies after that since I went to work already >_<), and I think it went pretty well. Our HR manager even wanted to introduced me to one of our bigger store's HR Manager. I don't know what's that for but she gave me some advice about school and thanked me for being very professional.

They said I could always come back should I need to. :>

It's a good sign if ever you want to go back.

If you do want to go back, leaving on good terms makes it so much easier.
