Solved Point of getting an SSD?

Well I'm going to be getting a regular hdd first. Let me get this straight though. Only get an SSD if it's big enough for the operating system and your main applications. Use the other hdd for your music, games, pictures, and other things. I guess I'm going to have to get that 500gb hdd since tb's are a little pricey at the moment.

I wouldn't bother with an SSD if I couldn't or wouldn't put my applications on it.

60 or 80 GB may be plenty?

If you did not put your apps on it, you would still boot much faster, but you would not be able to take advantage of the performance increase with your applications.

So like I said, only get it if you have enough room for your OS and applications correct? If that's the case I can probably get a regular hdd this week, and then next week possibly get a 120gb SSD.

You are correct. Levels may load faster, but once you are "in-game" the memory, CPU, and GPU are the only things affecting performance. Most gamers I know put their OS and apps on their SSDs, and then install their games to data drives (HDDs).

My games load a ton slower when they run from my spinner drive. Obviously game play speed is the same, but load times for cut scenes, starting and stopping the game and other things improve.

People "only" put their games on spinners if they are going to run out of space on their SSD's and don't have the cash to get a bigger SSD.

NewEgg "was" running 1GB Samsung F3's for $79 last night. I picked up 2 of them for work, but I see that they are now $109.

Yeah, I jumped on that $79 deal from NewEgg as soon as I saw it. We put backups onto hard drives and send them offsite and I need one for May and June month end backups.

I really wouldn't mind a tb, but I could probably be fine with 500gb. I don't know. The 500gb is 60 right now with 20 off. The price is originally 80 and 500gb more is 10 dollars more... I think the only reason I'm considering it is because of the 20 off for today.

I believe Samsung HD's are now part of Seagate...

They also have 750's for cheaper than that of Seagate. I'm just not sure if I want to touch Seagate. I've heard many bad things about them recently.

Seagates have always been a go to of mine. Western Digitals have been good. lately I have used the Samsung line of drives, which is now owned by Seagate. I've rarely ever had a hard drive fail at home.

My current hard drive is Seagate, but I've had it for a few years. It clicked a couple times and then I fixed the cables on it, and it stopped clicking. It passes all the tests, but who knows. That's why I'm going to get a new one.

I've got a Hitachi external HDD, which I'm very pleased with, so I'd agree with that statement.

I've always bought either Western Digital or Seagate, depending on what was available and at what price. I've had similar success and failure with both brands.

The latest drive I've had fail (unexpectedly) was a Western Digital Scorpio Black 1TB after about 1 year of 24/7 service.

The shortest lifespan I've seen was a Seagate. I bought 2 250GB drives, one failed within 24 hours, the other is still in 24/7 service today (see screenshot).

At any rate, all this is merely anecdotal, without getting a meaningful sample size it's really just a matter of your own personal preference.

I like to clarify 2 points:

1. A 60GB SSD is ample for the OS and a good selection of programs (unless you have very large games) By now I own 7 SSDs and the biggest is 90GB - but that is in a laptop where I have no other disk. All my /7 desktops run on 60GB including 2 virtual partitions for Ubuntu and Windows 8. All my user data is on the HDDs.

2. Referring to your post #27 - it is a BIG mistake if you do not backup your data, especially on an external drive. Those are the ones that die first. I just had an external Seagate go sour. Fortunately I had everything backed up to another external drive. Never keep your data on only 1 single disk. One can never have enough disks (internal or external) to replicate the data.

The OS and the programs are easy to replace. Best, of course, with a recent image. But even a reinstall from scratch is no disaster - just time consuming. But if you lose the data that you have accumulated over the years, that is bad news. And the bookmarks should be treated like data.

Everyone keeps telling me to back up my data when it already is. And not to mention my external is the only place I can back up my data unless I put it on my laptop as well. I can't afford more than one hard drive.
