Pointer Lag

Hello,
I recently did a clean install of Win 7. Liking it so far, there is only one problem: once in a while my cursor becomes ridiculously laggy. The more intensive the task, the laggier it gets. This never happened in in Vista or XP and its very annoying because I cant even close the application because of the lag.
I already installed latest Synaptics drivers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Zlo2 welcome to 7 forums. would be nice if you'd fill put your system specs in your user cp, top of page then edit system. This way everyone knows what your hardware is. If you mean it is slowing down then you could always adjust the mouse pointer speed in your control panel. But as to why well if your using up all your memory having memory intensive app. open then this could be why but without knowing your hardware I'd just be guessing. Fabe

I'd rather not list all my hardware specs. There's really no need. My machine is more than enough powerful for this not to happen. I can run most modern games on medium-high settings and multitask with ease, which I've been doing on Vista with no problems.
However on Win 7, whenever I open more than one app at the time, my cursor starts lagging and jumping around on the screen.
I dont have the most powerful machine and I dont mind when a program slows down or even freezes up for a moment but when my pointer starts disappearing and reappearing all over the screen, that sends me into a nerd-rage.
I understand this isnt a common problem. I couldn't find any information after 30 minutes of searching in Google. All I know is that, I've installed a number of operating systems on my computer (XP, Vista, various Linux distros) and I've never had this problem until Win 7.

If you would rather not tell us about your system, no problem. could be a mouse driver, scvhost.exe, too little ram, conflict with other hardware, etc

One possible explanation is abnormal processor utilisation which is so high (temporarily) as to make everything else feel sluggish. I'd suggest popping up the Task Manager, processes tab, sorting by "CPU", and watching what happens during the next bout of badness.

I am having the same issue, although the lag does not seem to be related to intensive applications. I haven't yet figured out exactly how to duplicate the lag, but it will start even when I only have my internet browser (Firefox) running, with only two sites up.

I have simalar issue.
I was running Windws 7 rc and the pointer would freeze and i would hear a usb device sound either dissconnect or connect then the pointer would move..a second or two lag this was after the huge tuesday updates. I figured no problem I'm doing a clean install in a few days. I do a clean install of win7 ultimate and right off the bat the same thing happens. I figure either its a new win7 upate or a usb device going bad. any others having same laggy pointer problem.
my system is high end build.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit and I have the same problem and it is driving me up the w a l l. I can't stand it. Mouse point lags really bad right in the middle of surfing the web. Even closing out all apps it still lags. Then it will free uyp and be fine. I have 7GB of RAM free. I checked perf monitor and there are no CPU spikes when this is happening. There is no Logitech mouse driver I can download. I put up with this issue for way too long on my last Windows 7 install and I swear I am going to throw this computer out the window if I have to deal with it much longer. It also delays mouse clicks when it's lagging... i.e. I have to click on links a few times

I have an AMD quad core processor. 3GhZ. 8GB of RAM. Solid State drives that are so fast they peg the Windows performance test.

I may be TOTALLY taking a wild stab in the dark, but if you have Microsoft IntelliPoint, have you checked if any of your mouse buttons are set to 'Precision Booster'? If so, change it to 'Default'.

This may or may not help you, but as I said, its TOTALLY a stab in the dark...

I am having the same issue with my newly installed windows home premium 64 bit.
The cursor precision did not help.

Nothing? has anyone found a fix? its happening every 3 seconds sometimes max of 2 minutes, once it got stuck and had to restart. driving me crazy please help!

It sounds like there may be lots of resources going on behind the scenes. I would go to msconfig and see what can be illuminated from the start menu ! Oh and as one other suggestion we do benefit from complete specifications as it allows use to research you systems components for helpful idea's. I know it's a pain but a resource tool like SIW | System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala can help this process. Lastly as was noted in an earlier post today patience is a virtue.

Cursor lag in Windows 7

After much researching, I think I may have the solution to this problem.

It used to be that in Windows XP and later, Windows indexing could cause problems with the computer processing slowing tremendously and thus having intermittent cursor lag. You can do a google search on how to turn off indexing (or in Windows 7's case, "Windows Search"). This doesn't look like the actual problem, but it will help at least with processing and may actually clear up some of the cursor lag.

The real problem lies with the VGA RAM. Every time I've had this problem, I would go through all my processes that were running and shut them off individually. This would not help at all, therefore I was looking for another solution. After playing a game one day, I started to have this problem again. I went and turned my VGA fan to 100%, and within 30 seconds my cursor lag cleared right up. Now I had a theory that the GPU or the VGA RAM was causing this problem.

To test this theory, I waited until the computer was idling and the GPU was at an idle temperature (around 35 degrees). This way, I knew that it wasn't the GPU. At this time, I had to wait to see if cursor lag showed up again and low-and-behold it reared it's ugly face. I quickly opened up CCC (catalyst control center for ATI cards) and jacked up the speed of my VGA fan. The problem cleared again proving my theory that it was the VGA RAM that was overheating causing this issue.

There are a few fixes to this problem.

1. You can adjust the VGA fan to run higher than normal (which as we all know will shorten the lifespan of the fan)

2. You can buy VGA RAM heatsinks from your favorite computer parts online dealer (I prefer newegg or amazon). These work best if you have a desktop, however if you are using a laptop you can do a little research to see which ones have a low enough profile to fit within your case.

If you have a desktop, or a laptop with a seperate graphics card that has a seperate fan, use the graphics card's utility to manually adjust the fan speed. If the lag clears up, you can take comfort in the fact you've narrowed down the issue and now you can take the proper steps in to have it fixed.
