Poll: Todays PC, More or Less Control & Options

This is in regard to a thread I had started about not being able to keep Microsoft 7, to stop automatically re-adding Onenote to the indexed items. But decided a more important question was underlining the issue.

To be honest I could care less about Onenote Documents being indexed its not going to impact searches with only about 1,200 items.Thats an estimate b/c as of right now I can't even open control panel / index options, ...unreal.

Most all that is indexed is start menu programs & favorites. Have way too many bookmarks not to have search aid with finding "that one link". But as far as Onenote, its very well laid out, easy to use & customize, so there's no need for it to be indexed.

What bothers me is that little by little it seems, You & I are loosing control over our PC's that we OWN. Never-mind, you don't own this software, you just purchased the rights to use it. Well thats all good, but when an option is available and a user changes it, yet for whatever reason the PC changes it back, for me thats where the problem lies. We are loosing more control over our PC's everyday and like everything else that happens in the Great Ole US, we all just seem to go along with it.

I'm not asking anyone to try and solve this problem anymore, what I would love to know in all seriousness,

...do you see a problem with the PC, Operating System, Microsoft, Vendor, and or Software/Application's Developer's , etc giving us options (or more to the point, "Showing Us") that can be changed, yet for whatever reason get reversed back, such in case of the indexing of OneNote Documents?

I mean look at the pic, Un-tick the box and it should never been seen again as being indexed unless the USER goes back and re-ticks it. Yet open onenote and shows right back to being indexed. WT*, Who's PC is this???

Onenote is so easy to use and manage, why on earth can't I choose to not have it indexed! In one of Brinks tut's Shawn states that when it comes to the index, less is more and index only what you want, yet it appears M$, (yes, in this case I'm using "M$" gousshh darnit) disagrees and chooses for itself what it will index.

I would expect many advanced members here will say either the same or more, but for the common user its gotta be less. And another thing I dislike is MS made most all their UI's in what can be described as picture formated. There was a time you could highlight any MS text in a UI and copy / paste for search reasons. Now you have to type it out. Ohh well,

I don't really feel I have less control over what I own. Sure, "content providers" (entertainment, software, etc) are getting more creative about the stupidity they indulge in but is vendor lock-in really that big of a problem that you can't find alternative solutions - for the home user, at least? Is your Onenote problem really a control issue or merely some esotoric indexing bug/OS brainfart?

Far as I can tell my computers are doing what I tell them to do, same as the computers I had decades ago. A lot more crap to wade through, perhaps, but still basically "my" machines. There's more software out there; of course some of it is going to suck. Back when all I needed was a small plastic case to hold my DOS, PC Tools, Zaxxon, and WordStar floppy discs, there was little to think/worry about but there was also little to do. Now I can waste entire days exploring free software repositories looking for alternatives for that program which counts how many meters your mouse has traveled.

If some ornery program is giving me a headache I'll say screw it, uninstall the sonuvabitch, and find an alternative. Gone are the days where I would spend hours finding the exact combination of command line switches, registry keys, and hieroglyphics for some program to work the way I wanted it to.
