Thought it might be interesting to take a quick survey to see who is running what on their main rig at home. I'm not looking for the SuperCluster you get to play with at work or school, just your main home computer. I know a lot of us have more than one rig, plus maybe a laptop, so vote for the best thing you're rocking on a regular basis.

Since polls are limited to ten choices and there are scads of CPUs out there, pick the range which best fits.

PS: The poll is public, so we'll see who voted for what. (Just so you know.)

List your exact CPU in a post here if you care to. :)

I'm running a i5-2500K and have the same feelings as ignatzatsonic. So, hyperthreading is the difference between mid range and high end? Off to Newegg to go shopping. NOT! :banghead:
No! :D

There is a lot of gray area here. Someone like me who is running a Socket 1366 Core i7-920 at just slightly above stock would probably lose a benchmark battle to a massively overclocked 2600K running a full GHz faster.

I had to draw the line somewhere, given the ten choice limit and the fact that the poll would be unusable if we were allowed as many choices as we would need to cover everything. The High-Mid-Low was just for the sake of convenience in guiding people to the ballpark location since I couldn't list too many details.

My rationale went like like:

AMD - High, Mid, Low and Ancient (4 AMD options)
Intel - High, Mid, Low and Ancient (4 Intel options)
Way better (1 option)
Way worse (1 option)

The last two covered the extremes, those being the lucky few who actually run a Quad-CPU/Quad-Core XEON setup at home, along with the unfortunate souls still getting their money's worth out of the 386SX rig they paid $1,399 for in 1991 - assuming they sprung the extra 400 bucks for the 40MB HD. (InfoWorld)

For what it's worth, I based the options on the PassMark Software - CPU Benchmark Charts.

Prof, don't take offense, it was just a little joke. Although, when I built it I thought it was better than mid range. But, an i7 is a better CPU than an i5 in that it is capable of doing more. At any rate, just having a little fun. Happy new year to everyone.

I didn't get offended at all. :)

I was looking through the Passmark ratings and saw where they claimed to have tested over 1,200 CPUs and got the idea of finding out who is running what. I knew there was no real way to weight a ten-choice poll properly, but gave it a shot anyway. I'd bet that for most of us, if our CPU got swapped out for something a grade higher or a grade lower it would not be immediately obvious to us during our normal daily computer use. Makes you wonder about the folks who coughed up $1,000 bucks for a 990X.

The vast majority of them paid for the 990X for the same reason many buy Windows Ultimate. There's a term for it, but I'd blush or get banned if I typed it out.

I just upgraded from an AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHz to a AMD Phenom II X4 980 3.7GHz. The Athlon II will go in my backup rig. I've slowly upgraded this PC peace by peace, so now I have enough parts to rebuild the original I started with as a spare. :D
