poor performance xp to win7-64 upgrade

I'm a newbie here, and haven't really fully browsed the other threads to see if this has been addressed. I have recently upgraded from XP to W7-64 and am suffering from extreme lag and poor performance. To be more specific, I am almost completely unable to multi-task. MCE slows to a crawl, and the a/v tracks are out of sync with nothing else running, however in WMP this is not the case. When running WMP and another program, as an example Excel, the same is the case (a/v syncro). Playing flash games in firefox is not possible because of the lag, with or without other programs open. I replaced my video card to the ATI HD 4350 because there were no drivers for the stock, this improved things somewhat, also upgraded from the stock 2gb ram to 4gb and saw no improvement. I have also experienced the BSD with Win 7, quite a shock. Even typing this post, the display is not able to keep up with my keystrokes. Suggestions?

are you sure you have all the 64-bit drivers? I mean for your board etc.? Al relatively newer hardware should have good driver support. Even with onboard graphics it should work well (as mine). 4 GB RAM are more thna sufficient to jsut run a browser.

Did you manually install drivers, or just use what W7 gave you? Maybe try first only what W7 installs on its own, if it all works, great. If not, go to the hardware manufacturer website to find W7 64-bit specific drivers.

Did you run virsusscan etc.? There are some optimization tricks, but out of the box W7 is quit fast already. 64-bit uses a tiny bit more resources than 32-bit XP, but your hardware should be plentiful.

Maybe he installed 32-bit drivers, I've looked up his desktop, HP site only provides XP 32-bit drivers for his desktop. If he installed the ones from the HP site then it makes total sense.

I'm using the drivers that W7 installed. The graphics card was installed after the w7 install and I am assuming that the driver is 64 bit. As for the motherboard, where would I find 64 bit drivers? As Nemix said, HP only shows 32bit drivers. Is there any way to verify the drivers and their compatibility? Looking in Device Manager I do show 3 componants that have issues - one is the big disk quadra - the computer recognizes it, but I can't find the correct driver for it, the second is Unknown with a location of "on VIA 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller", and the third is Unknown with a location of "on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System". Otherwise everything seems to have the correct driver. The other thing that is weird is that the system "rating" is a 3.5 Windows Experience Index - not sure if that means anything or not though.

1. Chipset driver not needed, use Windows 7 default drivers.
2. ATI 4350: Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM - Choose Windows 7 64-Bit Full Suite.
3. Realtek Audio: Realtek - Choose Windows 7 64-Bit.
4. Agere Modem: Agere (Lucent) Systems Soft Modem | Catalog - X-DRIVERS.COM: eXtremly full software portal - Choose Windows 7 64-Bit
5. HP TV Tuner, Mouse and Ketboard if applicable: Select your operating system HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7470n Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) - Choose Vista 64-Bit (From HP Site).

Remember to uninstall the old drivers and restart before installing the new ones, do that for each driver uninstall/update. I've made the list in order so uninstall/update according to number. Hope that helps.

You need chipset drivers - the ACPI driver isn't even being installed! I would clean install 7 if you haven't.

Frosty, his motherboard does not have Windows 7 drivers. Mine does not have any either, at least not from ATI/AMD. I just use the Windows 7 default drivers, everything detects.

And assuming he upgraded for XP to Windows 7-Bit as stated, that would be the same as a fresh install. All chipset/system drivers should have been installed by Windows 7 and nothing brought over from XP because it's not a direct upgrade.

Hmm, you are right - but those missing items from device manager are part of the problem.

I remember onetime I installed the wrong NVIDIA chipset driver for my laptop and things started messing up in the device manger. If he by any chance installed 32-Bit XP chipset drivers onto Windows 7-64Bit that may also mess some things up in the device manager. But I've asked and he said he did not install 32-Bit driver and only use the default Windows 7 chipset drivers.

Maybe, his motherboard is not supported by Windows 7? I know my nForce 2 has no support in Windows Vista but I found modified unofficial drivers for Vista. In the case of ATI/AMD, I don't think that's an option?

Maybe he should try the ATI/AMD forums to see if anyone else with the R200 chipset have the same problem with Windows 7.

Yes it was a clean install... had to because I was going from XP32 to W764. I will try the updated drivers that you suggested nemix, thank you very much on that... it will have to wait for a day or two though... work gets in the way of computer fixes. I will also try the AMD forums to see if anything comes up there. To the best of my knowledge though there are no true drivers for the chipset (was sent there earlier to try and find them, best information that I could find was that the drivers were built into the w7 install disk). On the missing drivers - I know what the 1394 is, it seems to be working fine, but what is the ACPI compliant system? Could that be the major issue here?

Have you updated your BIOS? I saw an a BIOS download while cruising the HP support site for your motherboard.

Have you also tried Windows Update, you may be able to find the ACPI drivers on there if Microsoft supports your chipset.

My current motherboard is a ATI 690G chipset with X1250 onboard video. There's no chipset drivers for my motherboard but it all detects on first install with default drivers. For my videocard I have to use Vista drivers but all works well, ATI support says the drivers are compatible with Windows 7.

If you had came here earlier then you wouldn't have to upgrade you videocard, the ATI drivers I'm using also supports your onboard videocard.

Okay made some headway, but I fix one problem and another crops up.

Went through HP ran the USB device update at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972. Fixed the missing driver on the 1394 OHCI. The ACPI driver was for the AMD Away Mode, fixed that as well. The Lacie Big Disk Quadra is still funky- and can't find the driver for it.

As for the BIOS, I can't seem to find anything on it. Looking up the support from HP on my machine the only update that is shown is for the Lightscribe, which i have never used. The current firmware on my machine listed in the BIOS is - Core 6.0 / BIOS 3.47 03/03/2006. Is that the current and if not where in the world do I find the updated one?!?

New issue is with ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 1.1 OHCI controller and ATI I/O Communications Processor USB 2.0 EHCI controller. The error message in Device Manager says that "the device cannot start (Code 10)". I am able to disable both, then enable and the work fine, but on restart they go right back to the non-starting error. Ideas?

You really should reformat your HD and then install Win 7. The Windows 7 disk DOES have the drivers you need for your 4350 card. I know because I have the same card and the install found it, and installed the drivers.

You should probably also do a defrag and run chkdsk /r on your boot partition. If all that doesn't help, rebuild with a reformatted HD.

Good to hear it's getting better.

On my system all three ATI I/O Communication Processor drivers in the device manager are under System Devices, sounds chipset related to me and should have been recognized and installed with Windows7 default driver upon installation.

Could also be a BIOS related Power Management option in the BIOS. Something to do with ACPI enabled/disabled in the BIOS...?
